DIY goes outdoors, giving winter enthusiasts more than 25 new ways to play in the snow!

Calling all snow lovers—young and old alike! When you’re surrounded by the white stuff, it’s time for Snow Play!

With crazy creatures to build, challenging games to play, and outrageous spaces to sculpt, author Birgitta Ralston, a Europe-based designer, has imagined the most creative ways to play in the snow. From a looming Loch Ness monster to a slippery Ice Slide, from a Snowball Lantern to brighten a yard to Curious Footprints to mark freshly fallen snow, the book includes 25 projects and games to draw you outdoors on a snow-filled day. Celebrate a winter birthday by building a giant Frosted Cake (and use food coloring to dye the snow!), or light your walkway with the flickering flames from a set of snowy Glow Cones. You’ll find hours of entertainment to brighten even the coldest winter days and nights.

Snow Play is filled with projects and games for any age, ability, and number of people. Each entry includes complete step-by-step text instructions, plus explanatory line drawings. The full-color photographs show how each project is finished in all its frozen glory.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Move over, Frosty—Nessie's on the loose! Swedish designer Ralston encourages children of all ages to play in the snow with this collection of projects both ambitious (a snow cave, a Loch Ness Monster snow sculpture) and simple (frozen fruit ice cubes, snow angels), as well as games to play in the snow. Many of the projects are family friendly and can be completed by children with adult assistance and supervision. This fun little book will make you feel better about the inches of snow accumulating outside your door.
School Library Journal
Gr 4 Up—Opening with explanations of different types of snow and the various tools needed to work with it, this how-to book describes more than two dozen projects, most of which will require adult help and supervision. Readers will learn that most of what they need is readily available, but that there are some significant tricks to successful snow sculptures. Ratings of difficulty, the number of people and tools needed, the type of snow required, and the time frame are included with each project. Short snow-related facts appear throughout. Creative endeavors like "pixelman," a shape inherent to computers, or mutated snowmen with fierce expressions generated from twig teeth and various numbers of eyes are detailed in photos and line drawings, with step-by-step instructions for making them. Particularly stunning are the creations that use candles or LED lights to illuminate them. A snow birthday cake adds dimension to winter celebrations. Ralston includes a sophisticated snow cave, including cautions and safety tips relating to sound structures. A brief listing of worldwide snow festivals, snow hotels and igloos, and an ice museum completes the package. While kids can certainly use this book to inspire ideas for winter fun, adults will find it equally useful, especially for generating ideas for family projects.—Janet S. Thompson, Chicago Public Library
