Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (The Colonial Radio Theatre on the Air)

( 7 )

Overview

“Once upon a time in the middle of winter, when the flakes of snow were falling like feathers from the sky, a queen sat at a window sewing, and the frame of the window was made of black ebony. And whilst she was sewing and looking out of the window at the snow, she pricked her finger with the needle, and three drops of blood fell upon the snow. And the red looked pretty upon the white snow, and she thought to herself, "Would that I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood of the ...

Soon after that she had a little daughter, who was as white as snow, and as red as blood, and her hair was as black as ebony; and she was therefore called Little Snow-white. And when the child was born, the Queen died.

A year later, the King remarried a haughty and vain woman and that’s when Snow White’s troubles began.

Meet the Author

The Brothers Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859) and Jacob Grimm 1785-1863) were German academics best known for collecting and publishing popular folk tales. They published Children's and Household Tales in 1812, a collection which became known as "Grimm's Fairy Tales." The collection included what are now some of the world's most famous stories, including Cinderella, The Frog Prince, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. Wilhelm married in 1825, but Jacob never wed and for most of his life lived in his brother's home. The brothers began to compile the first German dictionary, but only managed to get as far as the letter 'F'.

    A Beautiful Book

When I was a child, I would check this book out from our local library every week. The illustrations have stayed with me for 20 years. Now that I have a daughter, I am so glad to have found this book and to be able to share it with her. It is a striking and beautiful book. I hope others will take the opportunity to enjoy this book with their children as I will with my daughter.

    Wonderful

I read it to my triplets every night . They love it! Great but some times we spill on the cover of book and it just wipes right off! My triplets are 4 and have another girl on the way. Will make good child memories! Great pictures and very well detailed. Would recomend it for all you moms with small children but not for ages 6 and up. My husband read this book to them while I was stuck at work and great for dads to read to their children too. Can't wait till the next fariy tale comes out like this! Worth the money!

Poet Randall Jarrell's beautiful translation and Burkert's large

Poet Randall Jarrell's beautiful translation and Burkert's large, colorful illustrations make this a book to be treasured and passed on from mother to child to grandchild. The text is a flowing narrative, perfect for reading aloud  in the family or to groups in a school or a library setting. I have used this book as a public library librarian and given it to young relatives. It has always been a success.

Don't be fooled--NOT the Caldecott medal version

This NOOKbook comes up when you look for for Caldecott Medal books, but it IS NOT the Caldecott winning version. That may not make any difference to you, but since I was purchasing books for a class requiring all of the young adult and children's literature to be books which have won one of a list of certain awards, it means it was a TOTAL waste of money for me.
