Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
In this book readers encounter a world where evil forces have literally and figuratively enveloped the world. The coming of a cloud of darkness forces a small group of youngsters to take up the supreme challenge of their lives. They must overcome both great odds and wintry elements to restore order to a world where sadness has arrived. This intrepid group includes individuals who struggle not only with the challenges of their task but also with their interpersonal relationships. Throughout this fantasy saga readers are taken through a world of snow and ice where only the children's determination and great skills as skiers allow them to survive. This title concludes with events that underscore the need for perseverance, courage, and compassion in a world where their absence could result in disaster. Sadly, despite the good intentions and vivid detail sometimes created by the author, it misses the mark. Throughout this fantasy/adventure story characters behave in ways that really do not ring true. Plot lines are confused and leave the reader wondering what is going on. Further, the continuous focus upon winter landscapes and skiing soon achieves a redundancy that mars the book's effect. In the end this book remains a novel that lacks focus and cohesion, one that will leave its readers cold.
