Children's LiteratureSnowboarding started out as an X Game event in the late 1970's and became an Olympic sport in 1998. Today, the sport is popular at ski resorts throughout the world. This book introduces the sport, highlighting equipment, techniques, and tricks. Three things are needed to snowboard: a board, bindings, and boots. After that, the only other thing necessary is the "know how!" Simple directions are provided, but do not contain enough information. The reader is encouraged to "wipe out" instead of plowing into another skier. "Don't worryeverybody is wiping out!" This carefree approach to the sport continues throughout the book. Tricks are described and some safety rules are mentioned, but the mood of the text is to "have fun and get stoked!" Words from the glossary are in bold print in the text and a resource section and index are provided. Color photographs with small captions appear on every page. They depict action, challenge, and thrill, ingredients to inspire and excite even the most reluctant adventurer. This book is part of the "Extreme Sports" series. 2004, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Ages 6 to 10.
