Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Bruce Adelson
Much of the world received its first taste of snow-boarding from the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. This book seeks to take this one step further, introducing readers to the training, equipment, moves and lingo of snow-boarders. With lots of attractive photos and descriptions of free-riding, hell-side turns, and ollieing, this title is clearly designed for someone looking to learn more about this fast moving sport. But the book's descriptions can become tedious unless the reader is already an inveterate fan. There is a glossary that helps the neophyte understand some of this sport's unique expressions. Ollieing, for example, is when a snow-boarder launches himself into the air without using a jump. Safety is also emphasized throughout the text, with warnings about proper equipment, including headgear and warm clothing.

Gr 4-7-Snowboarding is certainly the hot winter sport and publishers have been quick to capitalize on the interest. This latest entry covers the expected topics: clothing, equipment, instruction for beginners, and a discussion of advanced techniques. There are some nice bonuses including illustrations of how to get on and off a T-bar, an informative examination of snowboard care and repair, and an eight-page fold-out that should appeal to kids even as it makes librarians cringe. Despite a cluttered and occasionally confusing format, this is a solid effort that nevertheless has little to distinguish it from a number of other quality treatments for this age range. Libraries already owning Bryan Iguchi's The Young Snowboarder (DK, 1997), Larry Dane Brimner's Snowboarding (Watts, 1997), or Doug Werner's Snowboarder's Start-Up! (Tracks, 1993) should consider adding this title only as demand dictates.-Richard Luzer, Fair Haven Union High School, VT
