Overview

Have you ever built a snowman and discovered the next day that his grin has gotten a little crooked, or his tree-branch arms have moved? And you've wondered . . . what do snowmen do at night? This delightful wintertime tale reveals all! Caralyn Buehner's witty, imaginative verse offers many amusing details about the secret life of snowmen and where they go at night, while Mark Buehner's roly-poly snowmen are bursting with personality and charm. From the highly successful team that created such winning titles as Fanny's Dream, Snowmen at Night is fabulous, frosty, and fun!

Snowmen play games at night when no one is watching.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
By now, the whole world knows about Snowmen at Night, Caralyn Buehner's adorable story about an iceman who droops in the morning. This board book should rejuvenate the old boy.
Publishers Weekly
Not since Frosty paraded through the village square have snowmen enjoyed such a slip-sliding good time as they do in the Buehners' (Fanny's Dream) latest flight of fancy. When a boy observes that the snowman he built the day before now looks droopy and disheveled, he imagines what happened to his snow creation during the night. Soon the boy pictures all the neighborhood snowmen gathered in the park for "ice-cold cocoa," a snowball fight, a round of making snow angels and more. Surely a full night of play and a long glide back to their homes must be the explanation. The rhythm of the rhyming text sometimes matches the rollicking spirit of the snowmen's wintry pursuits, but occasionally stumbles: "Then the snowman games begin: They line up in their places,/ each one anxious for his turn in the snowman races." The glee comes through at its most infectious in Mark Buehner's oil-and-acrylic paintings of the merrymakers, who look so delighted in their revelry that readers won't be able to help smiling in response. Bringing the brisk snap of the season to the fore, his scenes feature a natural light show, depicting an inky night sky and fluffy snow that glistens beneath moonlight and (street) lamplight, and eventually, the gradual brightening of dawn. Children will like being in on the secret here and eagle-eye readers will relish finding hidden figures in the shadows, clouds and snowdrifts. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
From The Critics
Does the tall and stately snowman, so carefully built one day, look a little disheveled a day later? "His hat had slipped, his arms drooped down,/ he really looked a fright/ it made me start to wonder:/ What do snowmen do at night?" When it really gets dark, those playful round guys slide to the park. There they enjoy ice-cold cocoa before having races and acting like grinning clowns. The fun continues and the snowmen play baseball with their brooms, have a terrific snowball fight, and take wild rides downhill on sleds. When they are tuckered out, they gather their snowman paraphernalia to return home. Vivid and luminescent paintings capture the snowmen in their joyous pursuits. Readers are invited to look for hidden shapes throughout the illustrations. Join the frosty merry-makers in poetic verse and learn why the grins of snowmen are a little crooked in the morning. A picture book that makes a smooth transition to a board book. 2004 (orig. 2002), Dial Books for Young Readers, Ages 4 to 8.

    Wonderful to spark a discussion

I am a preschool teacher with 3-6 year olds. I used this book in a lesson plan to spark a discussion and their imaginations about what happens when we aren't looking. The kids loved this story and we had a wonderful discussion about it later. I had a snowman project for them and their pictures reflected our discussion. Great for snuggling up and reading with your kids or using in a lesson plan.

    Snowmen at Night By Chandeni

. If you like snowmen you should read this book. I like the book because it is funny! Snowmen at Night by Carly Buehner and the illustrators name is Mark Buehner. The plot is that at night when people are sleeping snowmen play at night. The book is cool because at night they play baseball and they throw snowballs instead of balls. It the best book ever because the pictures look great. You should buy this book. The book is fiction. I give it 5 stars. I recommend this book for kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade. My friends would like this book and so would you!

Must Read for Lovers of Snowmen

Have you ever wondered what snowmen do at night? This cute picture book answers that question. In addition to the wonderfully, charming pictures, you learn that snowmen love to do some of the same things human children do. They do things such as: sledding, ice skating, snowball fights and many other activities. Maybe that is why when we see a snowman the next morning they look a little disheveled. Now we know why.

    Highly recommended for Pre-kindergarten children!

As a Pre-kindergarten teacher, I highly recommend this book for young children. The answers you will get when you ask them what they think happens when no one is watching is very funny!

    Great for Years to Come!

I first saw this book at a book fair at the school I work at 6 years ago. The pictures are amazing. I had mentioned it to a friend and was given it as a gift. (My children at the time were in 6th and 7th grade). It is a yearly coffee table book setting. My niece has enjoyed this book every time she came over (more than the other kids in the house). Every time she comes, we have to sit and look through it, she is now 10. This year, I purchased her her own copy to have. Instructions included she never get rid of it and someday share it with her nieces and nephews.

To this day, my own college age kids still look at it along with their room mates they bring home.

A great book for anyone at any age!

    Much Loved

I bought this for my son at Christmas two years ago, he'll soon be three. The book is now so worn from constant reading that I need to get a new copy. It's a fun fun ride, and he's now trying to read it along with me.

    Wonderful, fun pictures. Great story!

I just got this book this morning for my daughters (ages 2.5 and 20 mos). I haven't read it to them yet (they're taking a nap) but wanted to sit down and read it myself. It is just adorable and I'm so glad I got it for them. I think if I'm enthusiastic about a book that enthusiasm is conveyed to them as I read it to them. Then, they love it even more, too! The illustrations are captivating and I know my girls will love looking at all the snowmen and their antics. The author must have little kids, too. Check out the page where the snowmen are drinking 'ice cold cocoa', they all have cocoa mustaches!!! Too cute! I also bought 'The First Christmas' by Lucie Haywood. I couldn't find that book in a search here as I wanted to write a review for that one, too. If you have toddlers or younger kids this is a really nice book about Jesus' birth. Great illustrations and not too wordy. My girls will really enjoy this as well.

    For the Love of Snowmen!

I was exhausted from snowmen play when I finished this wonderful book. Growing up in Illinois, I have more fond memories of winter then any other season. I ordered this for my nephew in San Diego but will be ordering another for my "best childhood friend snowmen maker". She will laugh and cry when she reads this wonderful story and sees the great illustrations. A great book for all.
