Children's Literature
Emma has a quest—she must climb to the top of Snuggle Mountain and wake the two-headed Giant in order to have pancakes for breakfast. She must be brave in order to conquer all the challenges she encounters on her way—a rock turns into a cat, a dog is also under the "sleeping spell," and of course, she must wake the spooky, moaning groaning two headed giant. Her hunger propels her onward, and she is rewarded at last. Preschoolers will be delighted that their tiny tinge of fear will be unfounded as the two-headed giant turns out to be Emma's parents, of course. The illustrator has chosen a lively palette of jewel tone greens, blues and purples to represent the darker parts of Emma's journey, then brightens up the lively acrylics with a bright yellow as the day begins. The final wordless page shows the family around the kitchen table with Emma's expression one of pure delight. "And now that Emma knows she can climb Snuggle Mountain, she might have pancakes for breakfast a lot more often," summing up this perfectly satisfying tale for a preschooler. 2003, Houghton Mifflin Company, Ages 3 to 5.

PreS-Acrylic-and-pencil illustrations help make this tale of a little girl's triumphant trek to the top of Snuggle Mountain lively and exciting. Tiny Emma, intent on a pancake breakfast, must face all the challenges presented by huge mounds of green and purple. Her thrilling tiptoe travels are an amusing testament to her tenacity as she encounters a rock (the yawning family cat), a cave, and a two-headed Giant, before breaking the Sleeping Spell by announcing to her now-awake parents, "It's time for breakfast!" Storytime and preschool audiences will enjoy this amusing adventure that culminates in the family seated around the breakfast table in a cheerful, sunlit room.-Andrea Tarr, Corona Public Library, CA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Lane's debut offers an inventive story of one child's attempts to wake her parents from their sleep so she can put in an order for breakfast. The two-headed giant is fast asleep inside the cave on top of Snuggle Mountain and it's up to Emma to scale the peak and save the giant from the Sleeping Spell. If she can climb all the way to the top of the rumbling mountain, she plans to ask the giant to make some pancakes for her. It's not going to be an easy task. Obstacles include a dog and cat that have also fallen under the spell and the tendency for the mountain to occasionally have wild tremors, making climbing treacherous. Finally, Emma reaches the summit and climbs into the cave, trying hard to wake the giant. She realizes that what the giant really needs is sunlight and some noise. She supplies both and soon is leading the morning parade down to the kitchen for breakfast. Unfortunately for her parents, now that she knows she can climb the mountain, she thinks she might have pancakes for breakfast more often. Acrylic-and-pencil illustrations successfully turn the soft quilt into a craggy mountain and swirling blankets into a rushing stream. Muted colors and soft shading give this tribute to one child's imagination a comforting twist. (Picture book. 3-5)
