Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
When the sun sinks slowly in the savanna, it's bedtime for all the animal babies. Just like their human counterparts, the leopards, giraffes and others exhibit droopy eyes, big yawns and a desire to stay up just a little bit longer ("mischievous monkeys/ shout down from the trees/ `It's not really dark yet./ Five more minutes, please!' "). What all little ones do best, however, is "snuggle up"-especially in the company of their feathered or furry siblings and mommies: "In the soft swampy mud,/ baby hippo, so snug,/ Cuddles up close/ for a big hippo hug." But author and illustrator bring little that's fresh to this familiar subject. The artwork has an under-realized quality; with the exception of one bravura spread depicting two lavishly quilled porcupines curled up into "one spiky ball," none of the animals has much personality, and their expressions seem content but rather blank. Still, Freedman's rhymes have a comforting lilt and Macnaughton's soft pastel animals portraits-set against an expansive sky that slowly changes from blazing yellow-orange to deep lavender-blue-are cute and snug. Ages 2-6. (June) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-As evening settles over the jungle, baby animals stop their play and settle down for the night, snuggling close to their parents. Soft, full-spread illustrations in pastels capture the warmth and coziness of the families as night draws near. The gentle tone and rhyming couplets make this a good choice for toddler storytimes and bedtime reading aloud.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A myriad of young exotic animals end their day and rest their sleepy eyes in this rhythmic bedtime read. Each page offers an abundance of lavish color-the savanna terrain and friendly-faced, yet life-like animals drawn with vivid oil pastels. "The sun paints the sky / a warm, glowing red. / It's time to stop playing, / it's time for bed." Among others, a baby hippo cuddles close to mom; leopard cubs snuggle together; and wee porcupines curl up in a spiky ball. They are all safe and sound, warm and cozy, as the sun dips below the horizon. Mischievous monkeys have a last frolic and an elephant rumbles a deep lullaby. Each young creature begins its slumber as an inky purple envelops the night and it's time for dreaming. A sensory treat all around, but the flowing cadence of the rhyming couplets will lull young sleepyheads pleasantly into la-la land. (Picture book. 2-5)

Recommend as part of a bed time routine - Rhythmic words and the artwork is colorful yet soothing for night time.

Descriptive end of the day scenes with the various animals, and how each one winds down their day. Relaxing, rhythmic words with some alliteration that help to set a calming tone. The The artwork is fits perfect with the words and the colors changing as the evening ages into night takes you through the hours with each turn of the page. I love the illustrations !
I enjoy reading this with my son as we wind down during his bed time.

    Favorite Baby Gift

I first purchased this book as part of a baby gift, then I received a copy when I had my daughter. My daughter and I love this book. She's now 2 and it is still a bedtime favorite. I've since bought 4 more copies to give as gifts. The illustrations are beautiful. I was sent a paperback version ( I much prefer the hardcover) for this order so be aware and ensure you order the hardcover. I will continue to give this as a gift as long as I can find it.

    Wonderful Bedtime Book

I have been reading this book to my little guy for at least a year. Whenever I pull it off the shelf, he leans back and snuggles into my lap for our trip through the Serengeti. The words have great rhythm, rhyme, and alliteration that is very soothing; and the drawings are wonderful. The board book is a great size for one-handed reading and the cover is soft.

Adorable bedtime story with wild animals!

Mommy Bookworm's Thoughts: This is a very cute book with wonderful illustrations for anyone who loves animals! I think that even toddlers would enjoy the book because of the illustrations even though they couldn't read the text. It shows the love of families through cute wild animals, which pulls at my heartstrings since I love animals!!

Dahlia Bookworm's Thoughts: I like the cute pictures because they show the mom (or dad) and the baby animal. I like how the author wrote different things for each of the animals. I can easily read it by myself. I would recommend it to kids my age and younger.

Daisy Bookworm's Thoughts: I like the illustrations. I like how it showed a lot of different animals. I especially like the pictures of the baby animals. I could easily read this book & would recommend it to other kids my age and younger.

My 2 1/2 year old loves this!

My little one loves books and this is one of her favorites. We look a plane trip this winter and out of all the stuff I brought to keep her amused, this book was tops. We read it every night before bed and she has memorized parts already. Sweet story and really cute illustrations.

    A beautiful book!

I love this book. The illustrations are beautiful and the tone is just right for a bedtime book. My baby isn't due until November, but I am very anxious to be able to read this book to her. I expect this will be one of our favorite books!
