Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
"How big is a baby giraffe? SOOO BIG!" Get ready for a BIG hit: A familiar game little kids love is now a bright, bold, interactive book. Children can lift a big flap on each page to find out how big all kinds of baby animals are ("sooo big!"). And they can also answer the question "How big are YOU?" There's a tear-out ruler in the back of the book to help!
Leonard Marcus
How big is a baby owl? Baby ostrich? Baby snake? Let your own little one lift the sturdy flap on each right-hand page and see how big the baby animals are for herself. The bold, bright art should bring smiles all around.

Here is an "out of the box" book for toddlers. How big is a baby giraffe? Lift the flap up to see. Sooo big! How big is a baby owl? Lift the flap out to see his spread wings. Sooo big! How big is a baby kangaroo? Lift up again to see the joey jump. Sooo big! How big is a baby snake? Lift out to see him stretched out. Sooo big! How big is a baby ostrich? Lift the flap to see the baby lift his head out of the sand. Sooo big! How big are YOU? Lift the flap out and up to see the children, and to detach the ruler that is folded into the back cover. Dan Yaccarino's fanciful illustrations are just right for the age group in focus. The book has strong pages with lots of white space, and is a sure-fire winner. 2001, HarperFestival/HarperCollins, $7.95. Ages 6 mo. to 3. Reviewer: Candace Deisley
Kirkus Reviews
Exuberant as ever, Yaccarino is the perfect illustrator to turn this favorite toddler/parent game into a book—"How big is a baby giraffe?"—open out the gate fold—"SOOO BIG!" Similarly for baby owl, kangaroo, snake, ostrich, and, finally,"How big are YOU?" An easily detachable strip, measured out in inches from 21½ to 48, will help to answer that question precisely, though it may make the book problematic for libraries. Flaps open left to right or top to bottom, allowing the baby animal to stretch out in the proper direction. Brightly colored, simply drawn figures plopped on white backgrounds will draw young eyes, the sturdy paper stock will survive moderately harsh treatment from chubby hands, and the game itself—that could continue long after the book is closed. One of the better offerings in the glutted novelty market. (Picture book. 1-4)
