K-Gr 3-So Many Cats by Beatrice Schenk de Regniers (Clarion, 1985) is a charming counting story written in rhyming verse that tells how a household with one cat comes to have 12 cats. The narration by Shelly Brown begins with a verbal description of where to begin in order to help beginning readers locate the first page of text. Pleasant background music and sound effects accompany the narration. Side 1 of the tape includes page turn signals that sound like a cat's meow; side 2 is the story told uninterrupted. The book's illustrations by Ellen Weiss are delightful and will appeal to young children. Teachers will find this story beneficial as a math concept book, which introduces counting from one to 12, as well as an introduction to addition and word problems. This book and tape set will be useful for both school and public libraries.-Susan Mingee, J.L. Frazier Primary School, Natchez, MS Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
