Overview

With So, his fifth studio album as a solo artist, former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel made the transition from progressive-rock visionary to pop luminary. As uncompromising as it is accessible, So offers beautifully moody, stringent, evocative songs, coproduced with atmospheric grace by Gabriel and Daniel Lanois. The muscular, funk-laced first single, "Sledgehammer," was Gabriel's commercial breakthrough, topping the pop chart for weeks, and its accompanying video broke new ground on the live-action-animation front. The bracing "Big Time," with its slamming hip-hop beat and sarcastic view of fame, was also a Top Ten hit. The kinder, gentler "In Your Eyes" only reached No. 26, but remains one of adult Top 40 radio's most enduring and haunting staples. Other highlights include "Don't Give Up," a pining duet (with Kate Bush); "Red Rain," a grandly ambient AOR hit; and the buoyantly bittersweet "That Voice Again."

This wonderful release blasted the image of ''Former Genesis Frontman,'' and showed the world what an artist is Peter Gabriel. One of the best(if not the best rock love songs is #5, ''In Your Eyes.'' It is clear, passionate, and thrilling. Another great cut is #6, his tribute to the late American poet Anne Sexton, ''Mercy Street.'' This recording can be played as undemanding background music, but it rewards thoughtful listening, as well. I consider ''So'' to be one of the ''desert island 5.''

One of the defining transitoinal albums that marked the change from the 1980s to the 1990s. I rank this album with Brian Eno's best, Stop Making Sense (Talking Heads) and some of Velvet Underground, and REM's first few albums, for its effectiveness in wrapping an iconoclastic message in a crossover package. Truly a must-have in any collection that epitomizes the alternative rock genre. Easy to listen to - in fact quite catchy.
