School Library Journal
PreS-The unusual format of this book is sure to keep it circulating-the two stories are printed in opposite directions. In So Sleepy, peaceful animals-a lamb, a cat, a fish, etc.-close their eyes and doze, and on the last page a sleeping child is shown cradled by the moon. When the book is flipped over, lively creatures-a frog, a snake, a pig, etc.-leap and frolic, ending with a child jumping in the sunlight and shouting, ``Wake up, now!'' In keeping with the two themes, colors on the slumbering side are soft and subdued, while generally brighter and more intense for the awake side. The gouache illustrations have a folk-art look, with large animals surrounded by swirling plants or watery backgrounds filling each double-page spread. The text is alliterative, onomatopoeic, and satisfying. A wonderful way to drop off to sleep and then to wake.-Emily Kutler, Summit Free Public Library, NJ
