All Music Guide - Ben Davies
Joe Walsh's catalog by this point was two albums strong and of a consistently high quality. Despite a change of lineup for So What -- a wide range of musicians is used, including the Eagles' Don Henley -- the sound is very similar to previous releases. The classic rock genre that the man so well defined with his earlier albums is present here throughout, and it is pulled off with the usual unparalleled Joe Walsh ability.

    Joe at his Best

As a huge Walsh fan who has just about everything he's put out, this album stands out as a gem! It includes several classics that consistantly appear on his various Best-of compilations: Help Me Thru the Night, Turn to Stone, County Fair, Time Out. This album is probably one of the best examples of Joe's various influences and skills and ranges from ballsy hard rock to reflective orchestral (Song for Emma). As usual, despite this being a studio album, Joe seems to be able to keep that edge of rawness in his sound that he unfortunately lost a little in more recent recordings. The highlight must be County Fair which features one of the best guitar pieces of all time done with reverse recorded distortion. This is a must have for any Walsh fan and certainly recommended for anyone wishing to taste some of Joe's work.
