Overview

Discover the real voice of welfare - through thought-provoking interviews with today's welfare recipients who share their experiences with welfare and their views on its reform. Gain new perspectives on their history with the system; their plans, hopes, and dreams for the future; their perspectives on work requirements, family caps, time limits, and other features of TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) - the new welfare reform program. Their voices provide a vivid counterpoint to the politicians and media who shape the welfare reform initiative.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Within a critical-feminist framework, Seccombe (Portland State U.) views welfare from the perspectives of the 47 recipient women she interviewed (none welfare "queens"), the context of perennial culture of poverty dilemmas, the often suspect role of informal support systems crucial to survival on aid, and visions of genuine US reform in structuring work and social welfare. The interview instrument is appended. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Very well written and touching book.

Karen Seccome did an amazing job of capturing what it is truly like to be on welfare, and really putting a face to it. Her book completely shatters all stereotypes often associated with welfare receipients, and really allows you to feel for the struggle these women are going through. The book is very easy to read, and is very eye opening. I would recommend it to anyone, especially those critical of the welfare system. This book will really open your eyes.
