Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6–9—Covering the sport's basic scientific principles, MacKay has organized her discussion around topics such as physics, biomechanics, psychology, and physical training. The chapter on physics describes how motion and resistance play a part in each game. The biomechanics section explains the details of how the human body is used to carry out the plays, and while psychology and physical training chapters delineate how soccer players develop body and mind together to perfect their skills. For the most part, the colorful photographs are decorative. Attractive diagrams do a better job of elucidating information, such as "The Magnus Effect," which explains the spin of a soccer ball after a kick. Text boxes provide information ranging from inane (the definition of soccer) to fascinating (RoboCup is where various leagues of robots compete in a tournament). In a field crowded with offerings, this title is for readers who are writing reports or need background information for a science project. Richard Hantula's Science at Work in Soccer (Marshall Cavendish, 2011) is for slightly younger readers.—Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA
