Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Raina Sedore
Matty is a star in the local soccer leagues, but he has decided it is time to try something new. So, one day, he trades in his uniform for street clothes (which he has to beat up a bit to look more rugged), and picks a fake name. His destination is a local park where he plays pick-up games with other young teenagers. These kids play soccer not because parents and coaches tell them to, but because they love the game. In keeping with its role as part of the "Sports Illustrated Kids Graphic Novels" series, this volume is packaged like a magazine, with catchy section headings like "Sports Zone Postgame Recap" and "Feature Presentation." The content is designed to attract upper elementary and middle school readers, but the reading level is low, making this an ideal "high-low" title for middle grade reluctant readers. Matty learns new skills from the kids who play with fewer rules, and soon is sharing his new skills with his league team. This will be an eye-catching and fun read for soccer fans and soccer players alike. Reviewer: Raina Sedore
