As the soccer season commences, he and Callie end up spending a lot of time together on the sidelines. This casual interaction begins to morph into something more physical and intimate.

Excerpt:

“What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know how to ask you this.” She took a small breath. “Oh, now I’m being dramatic.” She finally glanced up, with a bit of certainty in her eye. “I can’t talk around this anymore. Are you seeing anyone?”

I didn’t answer at first. It had been a year since I threw Adele’s mom out. (I refuse to dignify her by even repeating her name). I hadn’t even come close to any sort of relationship or sexual contact since well before that. I looked her in the eye and said, “No.” I knew where this was going. Apparently, she had started to feel something towards me, too. The more I looked at her, the more I realized I had to tell her. “There is somebody I like.” I took a step closer to her. “Only, I didn’t know how to ask. But, the season is coming to an end.” I took her hand into mine. “But, I hate the idea of having to wait a whole year until I can have coffee with you again.”

Her eyes widened. “Really?”

That’s when I thought to do something bold. I had thought so often of kissing her. I thought I would just go there. If she pushed me away, it would sort of give me a sense of finality. Only, I suspected she wasn’t going to. I moved slowly, giving her every chance to walk away. As my face inched closer to hers, she slipped her arms around me – drawing me closer to her. When my lips touched hers, a warm, dizzying rush spread through me.

She kissed me back a little bit harder, like there was a sort of primal hunger behind it ...
