Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Raj Tummala, MD (Wyeth Pharmaceuticals)
Description: This is a comprehensive and thorough review of this very common anxiety disorder. The disorder is covered in tremendous detail from psychopathology, pathogenesis to management.
Purpose: The purpose of the authors is to provide a thorough review of social anxiety disorder (SAD) with evidence-based guidelines for clinical treatment. The authors not only meet these worthy objectives, but exceed them.
Audience: This very well written review is meant for clinical psychiatrists, psychologists, researchers, and anyone involved in the care and treatment of mental health patients.
Features: Social anxiety disorder has been one of the most common anxiety disorders. Yet, it has been underdiagnosed and poorly understood. Credible authorities from several countries write each chapter. The authors describe in detail the disorders, covering psychopathology, pathogenesis, and management. The spectrum of social anxiety disorders from general shyness to avoidant personality traits is very well written, giving clinicians better insight into diagnosis and treatment. The information is presented from research analysis and evidence-based guidelines. A section on assessing SAD with various scales and tools is very well written. Both cultural aspects as well as environmental roles of etiology are detailed. Of particular interest to researchers are the sections on animal models, neurobiology, genetics, and neuroimaging of SAD. The section on management covers the various psychotherapeutic techniques as well as the latest pharmacologic modalities. As this disorder is very common in children, both diagnosis and treatment in this population is covered separately. Information is presented in tables and each chapter has an up-to-date reference section.
Assessment: This is an extremely well written reference/review on SAD for anyone dealing with anxiety disorders. This is the book that I will refer to for my patients.
