Preface

In this fourth edition of Social Deviance, I have built on the strengths of previous editions. While the organization of topics remains the same, I have added new works and deleted others at the suggestion of colleagues and students. My objectives in this fourth edition were to: (1) present both classic theoretical works as well as contemporary substantive research, (2) provide a broad array of readings representing different perspectives in the field of deviance, and (3) include readings that would be suitable for undergraduates.

Although some of the older theoretical selections are occasionally more difficult for students to comprehend, they represent major influences in the development of the field of deviance and deserve attention and understanding. The section' of this edition presenting theoretical perspectives has been modified with the addition of new pieces representing developments in both feminist scholarship (sex tourism in Thailand), and the labeling perspective (whiteness as stigma). In the section on deviant behaviors, I have added new readings on professional misconduct by psychotherapists and on statutory rape.

This edition has greatly benefited from the work and dedication of my research assistants who helped secure articles and permissions and who sat through meetings where the merits of all potential articles were discussed. I extend my greatest thanks to Helena Rene, Veronica Gerth, and Natasha Nichols, all of whom provided excellent assistance for this edition. I also thank Marilyn Wahlert and Judy Omiya in the Department of Criminology, Law and Society at UC, Irvine for their superb support in preparing materials for the final manuscript. Asalways, Sharon Chambliss and Nancy Roberts at Prentice Hall have been ideal editors, and I greatly appreciate their help with this new edition. Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank the students in my deviance courses for their valuable comments and suggestions regarding past editions that should result in continued improvements of this reader.
