Description: Through the ages we have understood the importance of interpersonal relationships for mental health. Sociologists and behavioral scientists have observed and reported the effects of social interactions and the lack thereof on humans and animals. In some cases, survival is dependent upon the social structure of the species. While social support is important throughout life, it becomes crucial when an individual is faced with mortality, whether their own or that of a loved one. However, when and how to provide this support in the clinical setting requires that the clinician receive specialized instruction.
Purpose: This book has been written to prepare those involved in end-of-life care with a more precise framework in which to provide clients with social support. Although most of the information can be found in other books, the application of these principles can be challenging for newer clinicians. The authors provide examples and directions on how to provide social support to patients and family members.
Audience: The book is appropriate for students of thanatology and clinicians providing end-of-life care. Social workers, counselors, and chaplains also will benefit from the experience and knowledge that the authors share.
Features: Issues related to social support of the bereaved ranging from the difference between social support and counseling to the appropriate usage of peer support are covered. Two solid concepts presented here are that caregivers should not become overinvolved to maintain their functional status and that children also benefit from social support during the grieving process.
Assessment: Although social support has long been recognized as an important part of the clinician's role in palliative care, more precise direction in its application is necessary in the literature. This book is a welcome addition to the existing body of knowledge regarding this issue.
