A fun book to add to the permanent sock library

This is not a good "I'm knitting my very first ever sock" book. One or two pairs under your belt - then this book becomes a great jumping off point for truly individualized socks. It offers many different cuffs, leg patterns, heel and two constructions - however all are done from the top (i.e., cuff) down to the toe. So for those who like knitting their socks from the toe up, you'll have to do some serious calculations and perhaps pattern flipping. And although the book recommends using SWTC's ToFutsies yarn, as long as you get the gauge, the patterns can be used with any yarn.

I have two complaints about the book.

    1. All of the socks pictured are knit in a dark pink yarn which obscures some of the delicate patterns. And since the yarn (again, ToFutsies) is mottled, - dark, mottled yarn does not a good pattern picture make!

    2. Second complaint is perhaps picky, but nonetheless - many different heel and two constructions are offered, which is in and of itself, great. However, to a novice sock knitter, I would have liked information on why heel construction A might be better than heel construction B if you want results as C. In other words, something along the lines of, "if you have high arches, then Heel F might be a great heel for you to try" or something similar. Are there reasons, apart from aesthetics, that I would want a dutch heel and a star toe?? There is little to no information along that vein.

The flip-book construction is unique, and makes it a fun book to have. It does, indeed, make picking a cuff style, then leg, then heel and toe construction, fun, and you can at least get a general idea of what your socks may look like. I consider this a definite should get for the sokknitter.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

Unless you want a 64 st, top down sock, don't bother!!

This book leaves a lot to be desired.
-Red is a very difficult color to photograph, and most of the socks and samples are knit in red yarn.
-All the socks are top down
-All the socks are for 64 sts only
-Patterns are written out word for word, rather than charted (I think)
-Text is organized in narrow colums resulting in one rows instructions requiring 4 lines or so

I was so dissapointed, I returned the book. Definitely not worth your money. Go buy a book by Charlene Schurch instead. Or wait until Wendy D Johnson's comes out, if you like toe up.

    It's Interesting

This is a fun book with a lot of ideas for making socks. However, I found it annoying that the writers of the book recommended only a certain kind of yarn and certain kinds of needles. I should have paid attention to this because I don't use either, though I might pick up the yarn.

    Absolutedly love this book!!

It's a must for every sock-knitter. Easy to understand, consistent instructions, same needle size throughout. Innovative presentation of choices and ease of use for beginning, intermediate, and fun for experienced users.

Finally a knitting book for socks with more options!

I really like this book because of the options given in it. Since socks are made up of the top, body and foot, you can make unique combinations of color and design by "flipping" the different sections to find the sock you like. There are socks with no toes, with short bodies and tops, lace or textured socks etc. It gives me the freedom to explore new possibliities.
