Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"The moon, from his very special view of Earth from space, is able to inspire young Sofia to protect her planet. And I, reading Sofia's Dream to my granddaughter, hope to similarly inspire her."
— Denis Hayes, President & CEO, Bullitt Foundation, coordinator of the first Earth Day, founder of Earth Day Network.

Read an Excerpt

"In her mind,
Sofia left the world behind.
When she reached the moon in space,
She asked about his gloomy face.
'Now, my friend, that you are here,
I'll show you what it is I fear.
Take a close look at Earth with me,
Then tell me what it is you see.'"

Meet the Author

AUTHOR: Land Wilson developed an appreciation for nature as a boy thanks to his parents and naturalist Elizabeth Terwilliger. Having read that viewing Earth from space had a profound effect on a person's sense of responsibility to the health of our planet, Land wanted to share what he learned about the importance of protecting nature. After interviewing three Apollo astronauts, Colonel Frank Borman, Captain Eugene Cernan, and Captain Wally Schirra, Jr., he resolved to share this experience with children. It was then that Sofia's Dream was born.

ILLUSTRATOR: Sue Cornelison grew up in Libertyville, Illinois. After earning her BFA in Art Studio and Art Education from Drake University, she traveled to Florence, Italy, to further her art studies at The International School of Studio Arts. While raising a family of six children with her husband, Ross, a jazz musician, she taught high school art and pursued her love of art, design, and illustration. She has illustrated many book covers and enjoys writing and illustrating books for children.

Perspective is everything in this ambitious and heartfelt book. The reader journeys to the moon and brings back a big-picture plan to do a little good each day for planet Earth! The illustrations are delicate and thoughtfully crafted. What a lovely book with a terrific message.

This is one of the best books I know of for talking with young kids about taking care of Earth.

This is truly a lovely book, both the story and the illustrations. My children love it, especially at bedtime, and I like the positive message it gives to them, encouraging and empowering them to do all they can to make the world a better place. This gentle, sweet book is a classic, like Goodnight Moon or Guess How Much I Love You.

This was my daughter's favorite book in first and second grade! It is a great introduction to what most Apollo astronauts were so keen on sharing after their experience of seeing Earth from afar.

Start them young about the horrible human who "plunders" the earth. I was stupid enough to buy the book because of the artwork on the cover and the potential for a sweet story about a little girl and the moon. Thank heaven I read the book on my own before reading it to my four year old niece. Can you say "delete"?

The story started out really great but then it just got boring and overly preachy. I'm all for teaching kids to respect and care for our planet but this book sucked. If you want a good book about helping the environment read "The Lorax"! Or the beginner I Can Read book starring The Lorax. So disappointing.
