Editorial Reviews

Pearl’s World of Romance (August 2012)
“I adored seeing the Kelly family do what it does best: be there for each other to support and lean on through the good and the bad. SOFTLY AT SUNRISE portrayed that perfectly and brought the love I have for this series back to the forefront.”

A GREAT NOVELLA This novella gives us more insight on the couple Ethan and Rachel, from the first book in the series, which I loved as well. I loved the depth that was shown in this novella and how the couples interact with each other after Rachel's ordeal. This novella shows how Rachel is ready move on from her past. I loved how Maya Banks stills adds drama and action to the novella, which is the best. I'm so glad that Ethan and Rachel have a happy ending. This novella also gave us a sneek peak towards the next book in the series with Cole and P.J. I can't wait for that book to come out. I love the KGI series! All of Maya Banks books really. This is definitely worth buying.

This novella is a heartwarming look at Ethan and Rachel's life after the trauma of her abduction, torture and rescue. Ethan is treating every precious day with her as a gift. They have built a new home in the Compound for safety, and Rachel is so anxious to start their lives there. Their old home just holds painful memories . We reunite with the whole wonderful Kelly family, quiet and content.....for the moment. But wait...this is a KGI novel ; we have action! I thoroughly enjoyed this novella, which just wets your appetite for the next KGI story. Ms. Banks weaves this story with old and new characters, bringing us up to date with the Kelly brothers, their extended family, and a wonderful surprise. I would highly recommend this story .(les

Enjoyed the story, and understand that it was about Rachel and Ethan, but I am a little perturbed at the way that Rachel is always elevated above the other wives. Yes, Rachel has been through a terrible ordeal, but so has Sarah, who was raped in the most demeaning way possible, as have Sophie and Shea. I also did not like the way Charlotte, who is the 1st grandchild and the 1st Kelly girl in a very long time was treated in this book. If Ms. Banks had made those changes, this novella would have been excellent. I have also found that Rachel's elevation in status amongst the wives, and I understand that she is the first one to marry one of the Kelly brothers and that the family has known her the longest, to be a theme throughout the entire series.

It was nice to visit the Kelly family and see the progress and where Ethan and Rachel are in their lives. Can't wait for the next book with PJ and Cole's story - love Maya Banks!

I don't know about most folks, but in the majority of series I have read you don't get to see much other than brief glimpses of characters you fall in love with. That's why this follow up story was just spectacular. It was the perfect lenght with so many great surprises. Everything I have ever read from Maya Banks I have loved and never been disappointed. This was no exception.

5 star The story has laughs, suspense, and heartbreak. If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first The Darkest Hour (KGI, #1) No Place to Run (KGI #2) Hidden Away (KGI #3) Whispers in the Dark (KGI #4) Echoes at Dawn (KGI #5) This is more of Rachel and Ethan’s story. After all that Rachel and Ethan have been through she is finally ready to move out of their old house into a new one and start on their future. Rachel wants out of the old house as it has bad memories and she wants a clean slate with only new good memories. When she goes back to work and a situation happens can she count on her husband to come and save her? Ethan is happy and wondering what is different with his wife. Is she keeping secrets? Why is she so happy for the move? After the school situation will he be okay with her still working? Does Rachel have a happy surprise for Ethan? I loved these characters and also the side characters. I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the next story in this series.

Overall Rating: 3.25 Action: 1.0 / Emotion: 2.0 / Romance: 3.0 / Sensuous: 1.5 / Suspense: 1.0 // Laughter: 1 / Giggle: 1 // Tears: 0 / Teary: 0 Softly At Sunrise:  3.25: An entertaining visit with Ethan and Rachel Kelly as Banks presented a picture of their relationship four years after the close of their book, *The Darkest Hour*.  It was enjoyable to see all the members of the Kelly clan as one read the too-sweet dialogue that passed between Ethan and Rachel. Hero: 2.0: Ethan Kelly:  Still an under-developed, guilt-ridden, over-protective husband, willing to do anything to make Rachel happy and feel safe. Heroine: 2.5: Rachel Kelly:  Still a single dimensional heroine, who was dealing with her past and was excited about her future. Story Line: 3.5: Loved the idea of revisiting characters featured in previous books of this series.  Just a bit disappointed that Ethan and Rachel weren't developed much past the place where they were portrayed in *The Darkest Hour*. Action: 1.0: Banks decided to throw in a gratuitous almost suspenseful, action-filled scene in which the gun-wielding father of one of Rachel's students invaded her classroom. Emotion: 2.0: Rather than experience that exciting emotion connection to Ethan and Rachel, was disappointed in their lack of further character development. Romance: 3.0: Ethan and Rachel spent most of the their time together reiterating to each other how much they loved the other.  The tender feelings that flowed between the couple when they discussed Rachel's pregnancy was the most moving. Sensuous: 1.5: The two lovemaking scenes were short and spicy. Suspense: 1.0: Because the action scene was so brief, Banks was unable to build any kind of edgy suspense into the story. Secondary Characters:  2.5 Because this novella is only 103 pages long and there are so many secondary characters in this series, it was impossible for Banks to spend much time on each of the secondary characters she needed to introduce and write an incredibly brief synopsis of what happened to them in the previous books of the series.  It was still nice to watch each of them spend a bit of time with Ethan and Rachel. A more in-depth, detailed, spoiler-ridden review of *Softly At Sunrise* appears at Wolf Bear Does Books.

If  enjoyed The Darkest Hour, then you won’t want to miss this short, sweet novella about second chances. "Rachel Kelly has traveled a long, hard road in her journey back to her husband, Ethan, and the Kelly family. Now, as she and Ethan are poised to move into their new home, safe behind the walls of the Kelly compound, Rachel wonders if she'll finally be free of the ghosts that have haunted her for so long and if she'll step into the sun after a past steeped in darkness." Ethan and Rachel have long been my favorite couple in this series. This novella takes place several years after the events of The Darkest Hour, just as they reach a major milestone in their life together. A fresh start at the happiness they both want and deserve. Ethan is a man who desperately loves his wife and constantly worries he could lose her again. Recognizing his past mistakes, he's vowed never to repeat them. And over the years their relationship has only grown stronger. As the story begins, Rachel has decided to return to work as a teacher and winds up having to deal with an intense and emotionally difficult situation—it wouldn’t be a KGI story without some suspense thrown into the mix. And, of course, the men of KGI are on the job to rescue her.  A well-written, touching, yet suspenseful short story, Softly at Sunrise gives fans of the KGI series a glimpse of Ethan and Rachel's continuing journey together. Well worth the read, the renewed strength of their love and devotion for each other will simply warm your heart.
