Overview

The follow-up to Andrea Bocelli's remarkable 1997 smash Romanza, Sogno is a dream come true for fans of the tenor's sensuous singing and passionate pop songs. Powered by two tunes by Sartori and Quarantotto, the songwriting duo who brought us "Time to Say Goodbye," and a duet with chanteuse extraordinaire Celine Dion, Sogno capitalizes on its predecessor's formula for success. But Sogno isn't at all formulaic. Two of the album's most memorable songs were penned by Ennio Morricone, the celebrated and quirky composer who scored such films as "The Mission" and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." Still, it's the tender caress of Bocelli's voice that ensures Sogno will go platinum. After all, 20 million Bocelli fans can't be wrong.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Sogno consists entirely of new compositions, much of which are deliberately skewed toward the pop audience whom Andrea Bocelli was well on his way to earning in the spring of 1999. In other words, it's an album that seems to be a progression, at least on the surface, but it's also a consolidation of the crossover audience that he wooed over the course of the late '90s. Sogno pulls off that trick, balancing Bocelli's opera background with modern pop and Italian music. That stance alone -- finding a middle ground between classical and modern pop music -- will alienate the purists (who, truth be told, haven't been all that thrilled with Bocelli in the first place), but this doesn't discredit the music. True, there are moments on Sogno that don't work as well as others, but overall it flows nicely and maintains a fine balance between pieces that suggest opera without actually being opera, and adult contemporary songs such as "Nel Cuore Lei" (a duet with Eros Ramazzotti) or the Celine Dion duet "The Prayer," which was originally featured on the soundtrack for The Quest for Camelot. The most interesting moments are songs like "Come Un Fiume Tu," a collaboration with Ennio Morricone that manages to not only find a middle ground between those two extremes, but to push forward, as well. Songs like these keep Sogno fascinating, but it's the adult contemporary-flavored numbers that stand to bring in a larger, pop-oriented audience, who will then likely explore the rest of Bocelli's catalog. For skeptics, however, the very presence of pop-leaning numbers will confirm their doubts.

When I first heard track #4, O Mare et Tu, I had to pull off the road to listen - probably the sexiest exchange of sensuality between a man and a woman I've heard through music! This entire album is from his Soul. I would like to hear more of Dulce Pontes, too. Thank you, Andrea!

My first reaction after hearing this CD was that it would be impossible for Bocelli to release a better body of work. Sogno is superb! The man is 50 percent lung and 50 percent soul. If your heart hasn't melted by the time you hear the final note, it's only because it's stopped beating. Don't miss this one. I've bought at least six copies and I KNOW I'll buy more. Thank you, Andrea, from the bottom of my heart.

though sogno had me drifting in romantic daydreams, I think a good example of how this album can touch all that listen to it can be best expressed by my 7 yr old and 10 yr old children (whose tastes are definately contemporary), they sat in stunned silence and merely said 'Wow' 'can we listen to it again'......

He has a strong and bold voice that clearly shines. He is the epitome of a operatic tenor...

I was listening to this CD at a music store listening station in Manhattan and I thought it was beautiful and romantic. Sogno is my third Andrea Bocelli CD. Now I would love to go to Italy. Andrea Bocelli makes Italian sound like a beautiful language.

The day I bought this album, I needed a boost-mentally. I had never heard of Bocelli. To my pleasure and surprise, my husband of 34 yrs and I have fallen in love with Andrea Bocelli and one another again. We listen to the album and become young again. Thanks.

No offense. I love Andrea Bocelli. Only, this US diamond-certified follow-up to 'Romanza' has dynamic strength that is particularly too loco for my taste. It certainly isn't the definitive Andrea Bocelli recording.

No offense. I love Andrea Bocelli. Only, this US diamond-certified (!!) follow-up to the remarkable 'Romanza' tends to be out of control at times. The 'Canto Della Terra,' for one thing, is sexy but ultimately sour. 'The Prayer,' despite a powerful, easy-to-hear vocal duo by Andrea and a truly spirited-voiced Celine Dion, my once-favorite singer, is so emotional, I cried too hard the past times I heard it. The most serene song here is 'Mai Piu Cosi Lontano.' Still, where in the world are Boyz II Men or Phil Collins when you need them?

Even my young children are hooked! Have you ever heard an American 3 year old singing in Italian? How about a romantic 8 year old trying to impress a pretty girl by singing her an Italian love song? I love this CD and the memories I've earned by sharing it with my children!

This is a body of work that caresses your very soul. A strong well sung technically giving of his soul and mental energy. My personal favorite for giving massage. track 12 for finishing massage leaves clients in a wonderful state of ''out of body''.

This CD ties with ''Sacred Arias'' for favourite Andrea CD. The music is superb, his voice just so stunning. He pulls my heart away. ''The Prayer'' is amazing, and ''Sogno'' is exactly like the title: a ''Dream''. ''I Love Rossini'' is both spirited and heartwrenching. ''A Mio Padre'' is a reading of a poem in Italian that Andrea wrote for his father. I could listen to it over and over, and have done so. The only track I didn't care for was his duet with Dulce Pontes, but that was only because of personal taste in music. I recommend it and assure you that it will not be a waste of money. Andrea has drawing power in that seductive voice. Beware. You may become addicted through hearing this CD.

First of all, you should know that I only buy, on average, about 1 CD, etc. per year! If you want to get a great first taste of this kind of music, Andrea IS THE MAN! I had no idea I would enjoy this music this much! I had intended to buy Russell Watson, because of TV commercials, but after checking reviews of 'experienced' listeners, I decided to try Andrea first. ''Sogno'' makes me soar! I can't praise it enough, and after loaning it to a co-worker to listen to in her car during lunch, she bought a copy of the CD on her way home! We are hooked! If you are looking to expand your musical horizon, Sogno is a must! Bravo!

I love the first cut which is Canto Della Terra and, of course, Sogno. The rest of the album is just the best of the best. I love to take Andrea with me when I powerwalk in the park under the early morning sky. All my cares are washed away with the sound of his voice. I plan on purchasing his latest album and cant's wait to listen to it again and again.
