Solar-Powered Sam

Solar-Powered Sam

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This is a cute book with a little science lesson that will start young children off on a basic understanding of the energy cycle. Sam, an active little girl with a dog, gets "solar-powered" by eating foods that contain stored solar energy. It is unfortunate that the book is so shortjust twelve pagesbecause the topic is such a good one, and the presentation so nice and clear for the age group. Maybe it is just due to the brevity of the text, but it seems that the author, a former science teacher, does limit the focus pretty much to the consumption of plants. Perhaps a vegetarian message is intended, but if the idea is to present the science, meat eating is completely left out as a source of energy. A nice, little book, though, with adorable pen and ink and watercolor illustrations that complement the simple text nicely. 2000, Richard C. Owen Publishers,
