Children's Literature
Space has been in the news of late and the subject of space exploration and life in space is the stuff of fact and fiction. In this "Rookie Read-About Science" series, young readers will learn about astronauts and their space missions as well as what constitutes space. In this particular book, readers are introduced to the solar systemthe planets that all revolve around our sun. The four planets closest to the sun and the one the farthest away are rocky while the others are gaseous. Most planets have moons. Working outward from the sun the first moon encountered is that of our own planet, Earth. Each page of text is accompanied by full color photographs that match the text. The closing page mentions how conditions on earth are just right for supporting life as we know it. When looking into the night sky there are many other stars like our sun and the book ends with an open-ended question, "Could there be another planet like earth?" The book concludes with a picture list of words that you now know. The final page contains an index and brief information about the author. 2003, Children's Press, Ages 5 to 7.
