Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Most of the texts dealing with our solar system have been updated due to the demotion of Pluto as a planet. We now have a solar system that consists of eight planets and more than 150 moons. The sun is the key to our solar system. It is a star and its gravity keeps the planets in orbit around it. It essentially holds the solar system together. There is a picture and a page of facts about the sun. From there Vogt takes readers on a quick visit moving from the inner most to the outer most planets and in doing so provides information about the planet's size, distance from the sun, orbit, rotation, number of moons and rings. The Earth's moon is given special treatment as are asteroids and comets. Within the text some words are presented phonetically. On the last page there is a glossary. Vogt has provided a good guide and introduction to the solar system as well as lots of trivia for readers who enjoy absorbing little factoids. A Level 2 reader targeted to grades 1 and 2; Guided Reading Level L; a Lexile of NC620L and a word count of 751. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
