Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Karin Fisher-Golton
"Why is the Sun so important?" "Which planet is a good place to live?" "Which planets are farthest away from us?" Part of the "Science Everywhere!" series, Solar System provides a brief overview of its topic by answering these questions and others. The question format is engaging, though the style and content do not make it stand out in the crowd of Solar System books. For the most part the text is clear, but a few points are misleading. For example, Uranus and Neptune are described as "icy," which incorrectly suggests that the primary component of these planets is ice. The reading level is just right for children beginning to read on their own. The intent of a "Questions and answers" [sic] section at the back is unclear—some answers are found in the book as if it was a quiz and other answers provide new facts. A nicely done glossary and index complete the book. Illustrations, including an abundance of photographs, are colorful and interesting, but with several minor confusing points. For example, an illustration labeled "The Solar System" features Jupiter so prominently that it appears to be an illustration of a single planet. Elsewhere, a wise admonition not to look directly at the Sun is accompanied by a photo of sunglasses. Hopefully children will not be encouraged to sun-gaze while wearing shades. Though this is a somewhat engaging book for new readers interested in space, with the wide array of Solar System books available, it is probably best to select those with fewer confusing points.
