Children's Literature - Carol Kirkham MartinThis new addition to Pebble's nonfiction book set entitled "Nature Basics" allows emergent readers access to science concepts usually reserved for older learners. Photos of similar-aged children involved in familiar activities draw young readers in to explore properties of the three states of matter. Examples of matter changing from one state to another are given, such as pond water freezing from a liquid to a solid. The question near the end invites young readers to explore these terms in relationship to their world. Clear primary colors and simple prose with a controlled vocabulary combine for a highly understandable, as well as engaging read. Early elementary teachers and school librarians will appreciate this selection to enhance their curriculum and satisfy the curiosity of young science enthusiasts. Back matter includes: an index, directions for using Fact Hound to locate safe Internet sites, a list of related books, and a glossary. This selection for early readers would make a solid contribution to any library or media center. Reviewer: Carol Kirkham Martin
