In ospedale con il bambino c'è Dori, la madre, che insiste per riportarlo a casa: non si fida dei medici, è convinta che abbiano sbagliato diagnosi, mettendo a rischio la vita di Zack. A fronteggiare la madre infuriata c'è un'altra donna, Darlene Stokes, primario di Pediatria, che nel lavoro ha dovuto sconfiggere i pregiudizi razziali, e nella vita privata crescere un figlio senza l'aiuto di nessuno. Il comportamento irrazionale di Dori - voler a tutti i costi impedire altri esami e accertamenti - insospettisce Darlene, che ha sentito parlare di una malattia rara e difficile da diagnosticare - la sindrome di Münchhausen per procura - su cui anche la comunità medica è divisa: possibile che esistano madri capaci di fare intenzionalmente del male ai propri figli? Chi è Dori? Una donna che ama con abnegazione il figlio e il marito, oppure una donna fragile, frustrata, capace di azioni innominabili pur di attirare l'attenzione su di sé? Alla fine, a porsi la domanda è anche l'innamoratissimo marito. Altri interrogativi, però, animano il racconto: le due parti avverse, i Goldin e la dottoressa Stokes, che finiranno per fronteggiarsi in tribunale, rappresentano due comunità, quella ebraica, benestante, e quella dei neri in faticosa ascesa, la cui rivalità viene da lontano. Darin Strauss racconta con eleganza, leggera ironia, e la sapienza di chi conosce bene un ambiente per esserci cresciuto, una storia drammatica, che raggiunge il culmine del pathos quando una macchina della polizia si ferma nel vialetto dei Goldin e ne scendono un poliziotto e un assistente sociale venuti a prendersi il piccolo Zack...
