Solution-Focused Therapy
This book captures solution-focused therapy's essence, which distinguishes it from problem-focused approaches that have dominated the psychotherapy profession for over a century.

What do therapists and clients talk about when therapy is effective? The development of solution-focused therapy (SFT) has been guided by the ongoing effort to answer this question. Solution-focused therapy is a collaborative approach that invites clients to describe what they want from therapy and apply the knowledge and skills they already have toward achieving it in the shortest time possible. The three main tasks of solution-focused therapy include setting a direction based on what the client wants from therapy, building on exceptions and other resources that are already happening and available in the client's life, and exploring progress toward desired outcomes. The three main techniques of SFT are asking, listening, and amplifying. When practicing purely solution-focused therapy, the therapist does little outside of these activities.

Solution-focused principles and practices reflect the core values, ethical codes, and practice standards of professional associations and licensing boards in psychology, counseling, social work, and other helping professions. SFT has proven useful with persons from a variety of cultures and contexts, and on an array of concerns including trauma, substance misuse, and suicide prevention. It is well suited to the time constraints, third-party requirements, and other practical realities facing today's therapists and clients.

What People are Saying About This

Sara Jordan

John Murphy does a wonderful job of including process research and the evidence base of solution-focused brief therapy—SFBT. His use of dialogue throughout provides practical applications to key concepts. I also found his appendices helpful to SFBT practitioners!

John Sommers-Flanagan

John J. Murphy has always been my favorite solution-focused therapist and writer. Alongside his laser focus on client strengths, resources, and potential, he is relationally oriented. His kindness and empathy shine through in everything he writes.

Diane R. Gehart

A master at making complex concepts accessible, John Murphy provides one of the best introductions to solution focused therapy available today. His overview of the approach’s history is one of the most comprehensive I’ve seen, and everyone will appreciate his clear explanations for putting this theory into practice. Kudos to the author for demystifying this often misunderstood theory.

Barry L. Duncan

It is not hyperbole to say that this rendition of solution-focused therapy is the best you’ll ever read—complete, common factors based, practical, and highly accessible—written by a gifted solution-focused scholar and seasoned therapist who uniquely writes only about ideas and practices he has implemented.

Gerald Corey

Dr. John Murphy has done a splendid job of capturing the concepts and techniques of solution-focused therapy that clinicians can integrate into their therapeutic practice, regardless of their theoretical orientation. Highlighted are the collaborative relational stance, the unique strengths of this approach, and the centrality of encouraging client feedback, which is used to enhance the therapeutic process. The book is a scholarly treatise, yet the author presents the spirit of this approach in a conversational, personal, engaging, and practical way.

Michael F. Hoyt

Solution-Focused Therapy is highly informative and well written, practical and engaging, with numerous illustrative transcripts and lots of useful supporting worksheets and guidelines. I knew Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, the originators of SFT, and I believe that they would be very pleased with Dr. Murphy’s fine contribution. Highly recommended!
