School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-Popular YA author Petersen's premier picture book features a young boy who can't seem to get out of bed in the morning. Jimmy just isn't sure what awaits him. Will it be a strawberry waffles or soggy cereal day? He thinks of the happenings that make some days ``good'' and others ``bad,'' from school-bus rides to recess. Finally, his mother suggests that they make it a good day by starting off with a big hug. Children will relate to Jimmy's common concerns, and de Groat's now-familiar, realistic illustrations add to the book's appeal. The bright, double-page watercolors effectively portray regular people engaged in everyday activities. However, the story seems flat and lackluster-Jimmy's worries may be a little too ho-hum to warrant a second reading. Judith Viorst's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (Atheneum, 1972) is still the best ``one of those days'' stories available. Overall, an adequate, but nonessential, purchase.-Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI
