All Music Guide - Jonathan Widran
The global influence of classic American pop songs is very apparent on Some Kind of Wonderful, Ilona Knopfler's impressive and multifaceted debut, which finds the Parisian-born singer who spent some of her formative years in Hong Kong tackling '60s and '70s favorites in a variety of styles. She shows her aggressive, bluesy Bonnie Raitt-flavored wares on the brass-funk driven twist through Grand Funk's "Some Kind of Wonderful" featuring a feisty electric guitar solo by Pat Kelley, then goes jazz-trio cool on the Zombies' "It's the Time of the Season," revealing a different dimension of the tune with the help of Eugene Maslov's piano. ...

This kind of balance between pop
ock and different jazz forms carries throughout, and it's clear that Knopfler is most comfortable on the mid-tempo ballads, delivered with panache with jazz inflections. Although the grooves are organic and provide the most fun, Knopfler's deeper vocal artistry comes alive on gentle acoustic interpretations of "Alfie" and "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do."

    Some Kind of Wonderful

Ilona has captured my heart. What a fantastic CD! Everything on this album is so beautifully done that it is hard to pick favorites, but I could listen to her version of "Breaking Up", "Something", "Alfie", "River Man", "Never My Love" and "Can't You See" all day long. Sheer perfection... and perfect joy! I just know that Ilona will very shortly be a big star! Thank you, Ilona, and everyone who had anything to do with this album, for such spell-binding music!

    Wow! Amazing voice and presence!

Wow! Talk about an amazing voice and presence! I am thrilled to say the least with Ilona Knopfler's Some Kind of Wonderful. You may be turned off by the fact that these songs are remakes but lay your skepticism aside and listen. I dare you to for I know you'll forget any reservations you may have originally had as soon as you hear this amazing new talent. Ilona Knopfler manages to master what few artists can- she makes these remakes her own. She breathes new life into these legendary songs. When Ilona Knopfler sings them they cease to be someone else's song and become only hers. Many of these songs have always been favorites of mine but listening to Ilona Knopfler sing them has been like discovering them for the first time all over again. It is like having been in love with someone for years and then waking up one morning an realizing that he is even more amazing then you ever realized before. Another reason, Some Kind of Wonderful works is that Ilona Knopfler has a true gift of speaking from the heart with her singing voice. Many people have great voices and hit all the right notes but there is still something missing from their performance. Singing is like speaking. You need real emotion behind your words to get your true meaning across. Ilona Knopfler is one of those blessed few that understands this and poors her soul into whatever she is singing and thus makes it her very own. There is an honesty and sincerity to her voice and style that will work no matter what she sings. The jazz arrangements on this CD are genius. The average listener will appreciate this at face value but the serious jazz lover will find themselves impressed. Keep and ear out for this name! I believe we'll be hearing a lot more from Ilona Knopfler in the future. I know I for one can't wait for her next CD! Is it too early to pre-order it yet!?!
