Children's Literature
In today's rushed, hectic-paced world, this is a story that should slow us down to enjoy the important things in life, for instance, our children, and making time for them. Max asks his mother to go to the fair. He asks his grandfather to go fishing. He asks his father to build a fort. In each instance the answer is no, but "someday." Max dutifully retreats to his room to contemplate when Someday will arrive. With some help from the pages of a calendar, Max realizes he cannot wait for Someday. Momma does not understand, with her long to-do list. Finally Momma relents, announces she has found Someday and they share a memorable day at the fair. Daddy and Grandpa find Someday, too, making for special bonding moments for everyone. Max's patience and compliant attitude contribute to the lesson learned by the adults and the simplistic charm of this book. O'Malley's placid, serene watercolor illustrations soften the family, allowing for identification of an all too common concern for many families. 2005, Sleeping Bear Press, Ages 4 to 8.

From The Critics
K-Gr 3-A beaver longs to have some fun with the adults in his life but they are all too busy. "Someday, Max, but not today" is their favorite reply to each requested activity. He sits down with a calendar, and the days of the week tell him the truth about "Someday." When he passes on his newfound knowledge to his mother, she responds in a positive manner and suddenly all of his wishes come true. The artwork, rendered in watercolors, is expressive and conveys Max's goofy innocence. When "Someday" is transformed into "today," the abrupt shift feels like a sudden stop on an amusement ride. Perhaps the book is intended as a word of warning for adults. For children, the message appears that they need only crack a mysterious verbal code and their most cherished dreams will be instantly gratified. A clever idea, but the writing falls short of its promise.-Teresa Pfeifer, Alfred Zanetti Montessori Magnet School, Springfield, MA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

A children's book for grown ups

I bought this book to give to my grandson. Instead, I'm giving copies to his parents and grandparents and to friends who are parents and grandparents. While telling a 'children's' story, this book really reminds us all of what's important in life.
