Overview

The Goo Goo Dolls were sliding toward the expected placid on 2006's Let Love In, so a shake-up was due. To a certain extent that's what 2010's Something for the Rest of Us delivers in its content if not in its sound. This is the album where Johnny Rzeznik decides that it's time for him to look outside himself and take in the mess of the outside world, addressing everything from ongoing war to economic devastation. Big topics require a big sound, so the Goo Goo Dolls grab a few ideas from U2, underlining the intended weightiness. While the band remains much closer to the warm AAA bath that's become their defining signature, the added ambition does give Something for the Rest of Us variety that's welcome after the exceedingly pleasant Let Love In.

The Goo Goo Dolls' new album is well worth the wait! It was originally supposed to come out early this year but they went back and worked on it some more and this is the result. In my opinion, this is their best album since Dizzy Up The Girl. I loved Gutterflower and Let Love In, but the music and raw emotion in John's voice here is just incredible. He is such an amazing songwriter. Robby's tracks are also great, some of his best. Definitely pick this up if you like lyrics that are relevant to your life and music that you can get lost in! My favorite tracks so far are Soldier, One Night, Something for the Rest of Us, Sweetest Lie, and Notbroken. Get it!! :)

I have been a fan of the Goo Goo Dolls for years and this album is my favorite to date. There are so many great songs on this album, it's worth purchasing the CD or entire digital album. "Home", "Notbroken", "Sweetest Lie", "As I Am", and "Soldier" are my favorites but I enjoy listening to the entire album. I love the addition of strings and piano on many songs in this album because they add to the complexity and beauty of the music. John Rzeznik sings many of the songs but Robby Takac sings on the new album too, creating a nice variety.
