Overview

Ginny Owens's smash 1999 debut, Without Condition, heralded the talented singer-songwriter as a new star of the genre. Her wispy vocal style brought comparisons to such neo-folkies as Jonatha Brooke, Lisa Loeb, and Suzanne Vega -- and not a little denigration as a mainstream pop clone. Something More, Owens's sophomore release, should change some minds. With a greater emphasis on Owens's thoughtful songwriting, Something More is full of lyrical magic embellished by loose, jazz-inspired melodies. While not preachy, Owens's songs are undeniably Christian in content, focusing on the many ways God's hand is evident in her life. The occasional grit of Without Condition is smoothed away; the opening track, "With Me," is embellished with an odd little synth blip, but for the most part Owens and producer Monroe Jones are content to leave her piano-based compositions alone, luring listeners into really hearing her eloquent lyrics. Sunny instrumentation and breezy backing vocals set apart upbeat tunes like "Run to You" and "I Know Someone," but Owens is characteristically poignant on "True Story" and "This Road" -- two songs that reach deep into the heart. Doubters are put on notice: There really is something more to Ginny Owens.

Billboard
Intelligent, often vulnerable lyrics and her girlishly engaging vocals provide a one-two punch that's difficult for listeners to resist.
