Sometimes I like to curl up in a ball
So no one can see me

Little wombat spends a day doing favorite things--what could they be? Are they your favorites, too? Let's look and see! He especially enjoys walking around and around, and doing a pigeon step till he falls down. Or sticking out his pink tongue--and pulling funny faces (now that can be fun)! And maybe he'll jump just as high as he can, and see how much noise he will make when he lands. But when the day ends and the sun starts to fall...he goes back home to mama and curls into a ball. Good night! Soft-toned illustrations portray an endearing little wombat and the warm and friendly world around him--and every page is filled with charming details that stand up to repeat viewings: cute mice, rabbits and turtles peering from behind tall grass, marching pigeons, and a menagerie of other adorable animals. The images, along with the lyrically rhyming text, combine to make a sweet-spirited bedtime story to ease young ones to sleep.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
With a repertoire of comic expressions worthy of Nathan Lane, a plump wombat invites readers to join with him and his pals (which include a koala, a mole and a frog) in a full day of unbridled goofing off. This book from a British duo is silly to the core, but it's also a pointed paean to the power of unscheduled play. Along with curling up like a ball, "so no one can see me because I'm so small," the wombat also explains in simple couplets that sometimes the hero likes to "walk round and round" with pigeons until he falls down dizzy, cover himself in mud and make faces. In the middle of the book the friends hold a race, and it's clear that Fuge relishes the opportunity to show each sprinter striving for a highly idiosyncratic personal best (a centipede marching in close second will illicit giggles) while a gallery of insects cheers. Wombat ends his day doing "what I do best of all," curled up beside his loving mom in their tree trunk home. After working so hard at having fun, no one will begrudge this little ball of bonhomie a well-deserved rest. Ages 2-5. (Oct.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

This book is an all time favorite at our house!

My girls have loved this cute little wombat for years. We love to quote the book and share by giving it as a first birthday present.

I am happy with the book, but am not happy with the time it took for the book to arrive. I will not be renewing my Barnes & Noble membership.

    Daughter's favorite book!

My 16 month old adores this sweet story of a wombat. We borrowed it from the library but are going to purchase our own copy because she loves to read it over and over again. The wombat displays an ability to make anything fun! But what we especially love is the way that wombat finds a safe warm place to curl up at the end of the day.

    Wonderful Memories

I bought this book to read to my Special Education students. However, when I read it to my granddaughters the book never made it to my class. This book is about feeling good, safe and loved - a must read for any age.

    I can be me...

I feel that 'Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball' is a very good book. The illustration are very bright and playful. The story line says that you can be yourself just because you can be and that at the end of the day, you can still go home and be safe and loved. It expresses how differences are out there and can be fun. I have read this book to several schoolaged kids and they love it!!!!:)

    Great Before Going Outdoors

I bought this book for my preschoolers and they totally love it! The pictures are so pretty and soft. The children like to do everything the wombat does. It gets them excited and ready to go play outside.

    Great picture book!

I purchased this book for my 14 month old son for Christmas and he loves it! There is a really funny page where the wombat makes funny faces and my son thinks it's terrific. I would recommend this as a sweet and funny bedtime or anytime story.

This is a WONDERFUL book. Get it!

My sister gave this book to my son and it is one of our all time favorites. I love it so much that I often hope it is the book of choice for bedtime reading. Beautiful illustration and a sweet story. We had a problem with my son yelling inside the house, so now we say you can scream like the wombat...outside! I can't encourage you enough to get this book.

I am the mother of a toddler and a teacher. When I received this book, I couldn't have been more pleased. Page after page brought a visual feast. Charles Fuge's illustrations are charming, clever, and beautiful. I love this book. It makes me smile.
