Overview

Somewhere Children Shout takes you back to the life of a kid in the 1950s, with the author as Exhibit A. It’s a candid look at growing up in a town with one traffic light, and where the sale of booze of any kind could get you jail time. Where stringent “blue laws” were in place, and picking up a bottle of milk had to be postponed until Monday. But for a kid in the fifth grade it was pretty close to perfect. Saturday was the best day of the week. Dating was the province of mystery. And you could do whatever you wanted, constrained only by the size of your allowance (try 85 cents a week).
It was the Catskills in upstate New York at a time when just having your own bike at age 10 was as good as having your own car and you could tour the territory at will. It was your own world, entirely at your disposal. Oh sure: there were snags here and there, as well as a couple of guys who had burnished bullying to a small art form. But your own imagination and energy were king, and adventures awaited your bidding. And best of all, for a kid it was a time and place for discovery, a small-scale life in preparation for the real thing.
Told in first person with wit and honesty, the author’s recollections are genuine, with connections to the experiences of today’s young people.
Times were different, challenges were different. Were they better, were they easier? You’ll have to make the call.

Meet the Author

Boy writer, train freak, baseball nut and movies guy. On the heels of too many years in aerospace putting words in the mouths of the movers and shakers, I now hit the keyboard for the people. Writing has become fun and constantly new.
