All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Now in the third phase of his recording career, following an early-'70s stint as a teen idol and a late-'80s period as a dance-pop star, Donny Osmond returned to recording in 2001 with This Is the Moment, on which he performed contemporary show tunes in contemporary pop arrangements. It was the kind of album concept a pre-rock pop singer might have undertaken and which many did in the '50s and '60s, and the follow-up is another one of those concepts: an album of covers of pop songs done in contemporary arrangements and in Osmond's familiar vocal style. The difference, of course, is that while Frank Sinatra, say, in the '50s might do an album of old Tin Pan Alley ...

The difference, of course, is that while Frank Sinatra, say, in the '50s might do an album of old Tin Pan Alley standards from the '30s, they were songs not so closely associated with a particular singer or a particular recording, and thus were easier to claim for his own. Osmond, on the other hand, must contend with the original hit recordings of 10cc's "I'm Not in Love," Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over," and the Turtles' "Happy Together," to name only three. And when it comes to "Without You" and "Puppy Love," there are two hit recordings to consider in the latter case, of course, one of them his own. He doesn't really improve on any of the originals, but he does do a respectable job, and in so doing he does these songs a favor by demonstrating that they can have legitimate lives as songs beyond the familiar recordings of them; they really are standards. He has chosen material that works well with his elastic tenor, and he has thought about the lyrics, lending greater coherency to them than they had originally. [The album closes with an up-tempo hidden track, "Crazy Horses," that harks back to Osmond's dance-pop days.]

    EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT

This is a fantastic CD, I'm listening to it now. Great songs were chosen and the vocals are outstanding. BUY this one. I wish I could sing like this. AH ! I will be listening to this one as much as I listen to Elton John, Phil Collins, Celine Dion and Dave Mathews.

Take Somewhere in Time Home Today

Donny Osmond has done it again. Every thing he touches turns to absolute putty in his hands and this CD of contemporary music from the 80's is no exception. Donny's voice has only become more mature and richer with the passage of time. Yes, I am a Donny Osmond fan, but have sprung this CD on people I know without them being fans and the reception is still the same. What a voice! How can one man pack so much passion into a ballad? We don't know but Donny continues to do it time and again. The passion of "Without You" and "All Out of Love" will turn even the most cynic of critics into mush on the floor. The dance rhythms of "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love", Would I Lie to You" and "I Can't Go For That" are infectious and totally Donny's own. After you listen to Donny's versions you have a hard time remembering the original because Donny truly makes them his own as only he can. Donny has chosen songs that truly were our favorites before and with which he can imbue with all the passion and infectious enthusiasm that has always been Donny's trademark. Take it home today, every member of the house will find a different song to take to their heart and love. If this CD doesn't have grooves made in it from playing and being played continuously I'm not an Osmond fan.

    He does it again!

He may be a pop icon, not everyone likes him, but Donny Osmond has an amazing voice. Anything he sings sounds great. I bought his album yesterday and I especially love "Can't Help Falling In Love", "Don't Dream It's Over" and of course "Puppy Love". I saw him in concert last year, and I am planning to see him again in March because he is a wonderful showman with an amazing talent. I hope he keeps on singing till he's 102.

Still "Puppy Love" after all these years:-)

Donny's voice has the ability to woo this 40-something "girl" even now! He's gotten better with age. Great choice of songs, this is the cd you drive down the road listening to and sing along with and don't even care if people are watching!

The good, the bad and the ugly!

Yes, I'm a serious Donny fan with every american release he's ever done and a few foreign releases for good measure - but this is a CD which gets mixed reviews from this aging puppy lover. Make no mistake about it, Mr. Osmond has made a true profession out of his career and the invested development of his natural vocal talent has never been more apparent or better. He is one fine vocalist with incredible range. But, when it comes right down to it there on tracks on this CD he does BETTER than I have ever heard by anyone while others fall short. Granted, as this is a CD of covers alot of anyone's enjoyment might boil down to whether they liked each song in *pre-his-story" times or not. With the exception of just a few, most of his arrangements resemble the original which made them worthy of a cover. Here's a quick take on the high points and low in my opinion. First the low. Let's get it over with! Would I Lie To You. Sorry Donny, it's a challenging song to sing and the job you do is adequate but it's just hard to make a black r & b singer out of white guy from Utah. Close, but no smoke-free cigar for you on this one. Happy Together pulls it out of the hat by the last half but the first half is a filler snooze. I lose interest in the song before the going gets good! And the final song worthy of a not so honorable mention is Don't Dream It's Over. He does a good job on it but I find it impossible to forget the vocal edginess present in the original which does not exist in Donny's version. On to better news! Without You is a beautiful song with a beautiful voice rolled out first for what must be good reason. It'll get your attention! I Can't Go For That is one of the few on this CD which diverges from the original. Donny gives it a good funk. I didn't like this song beforehand, I do now! It and Don't Give Up On Us Baby, which I thought would take an anasthesiologist to make me EVER like are both that way. Donny's covers of both are BY FAR the best I've heard...and that includes the original. You'd have to fall head-first off a dump truck going 90 to mess up Could It Be I'm Falling In Love. Donny's no exception. His cover is smoother than the original and he sings it better than the original. Listen for the those last three "with yous". Ouch! So good, they hurt! I'm Not In Love. I'm not writing word-one bad about this track. Love it! Great emoting.....a formerly strange feeling song made very understandable and felt. Acoustic Puppy Love and the funked up Crazy Horses, a hidden track. Two old Osmond hits made new again and better than ever. All in all, I consider the CD worth the price but his last CD This Is The Moment was one of those rare CD's where every song was my favorite. Can't say that about this one. Nevertheless, there's alot to enjoy and something for everyone. Worthy of your CD collection if you know a good tenor voice when you hear it.

Lost in the 70's, and loving it!

Ok, I admit it, I loved Donny Osmond as a teenager singing "Puppy Love", and that love has matured along with his rich, emotion-charged voice. The songs chosen for this CD were personal favorites of Donny's and his fans (he gave them the opportunity to vote for their favorites on his websight) from the 70's, 80's and 90's. Some pleasant surprises include his approach on the Crowded House hit "Don't Dream It's Over" and a hidden track of the old Osmond hit "Crazy Horses", not one of my personal favorites, but a fun cut none the less. I am also happy to report that Donny sings a lovely rendition of 70's television star David Soul's "Don't Give Up on Us" (all on key, unlike Mr. Soul). The recording also features the first release of "No One Has To Be Alone," from the upcoming home video release "The Land Before Time: Journey To Big Water", sure to be a favorite with parents and children alike. Thanks to Donny Osmond for making this blast to the past such a great ride!

    Top Album!

This album is great! All my fravorite songs from the past 4 decades, and all given a fresh breath of life. Donny performs all the songs just great, the whole album is so varied too, and has a really nice 'New light through old Windows' feel throughout. It's an essential addition to your collection for any fan of Donny, even if you're not, you'll love it! I give this 5 stars, place your order now!

    Somewhere in Time is AWESOME!

Donny Osmond is Pyramid¿s game show host, married to Debbie, has 5 sons, is the brother of Virl, Tom, Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay, Marie, and Jimmy, but to millions of people around the world Donny is first and foremost a magnificent singer. Some of us know Donny from the "Donny and Marie" variety show or talk show, as Joseph in the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat or the singing voice of Shang in Mulan, but millions knew Donny long before as a singer on the Andy Williams Show and as a member of The Osmonds. Anticipation has been great for ¿Somewhere in Time" and not only has it lived up to expectations, it has surpassed them a hundred times. From the first notes of ¿Without You¿ to the last note of the hidden track ¿Crazy Horses¿, Donny¿s strong, soulful, emotion-filled voice makes one want to cry, laugh, sing-along, dance, and remember. For husbands and boyfriends, this is a CD you can enjoy along with your lady. If you buy her this, she will be extremely happy. If she¿s already bought one for herself, buy the UK version (or US version for those overseas). There are a few different tracks on each and different CD covers. This will score MAJOR points for you and everyone knows when the lady of the house is happy, EVERYONE is happy. Young people may have wondered why their mothers or grandmothers have a stack of 30 to 40 albums and CDs with Donny Osmond¿s picture on the cover, why she tapes ¿Pyramid¿ everyday, why she acts like a teenager at an N-Sync concert whenever she sees Donny on TV or in person. The reason is simple, for many women Donny Osmond was their first ¿Puppy Love¿ back when this song was first released 30 years ago. There is no comparison between the original version and the version on this CD. Donny¿s mature voice has so much feeling that I¿m sure most women will be in love all over again (hopefully with their husbands or boyfriends this time though). This transports women back to the fountain of their youth and for a short time, women can feel 10-16 again. ¿Without You¿ is a song that grabs your attention and by the end all you can say is ¿WOW!¿ Donny¿s voice is so clear and strong with a range that most people will not believe. If you see people crying after listening to this song, it is because it is that good. This is one of the best songs I have ever had the pleasure to hear live. This song left Kelly Clarkson in awe when she heard Donny sing this live. A sure hit, if I¿ve ever heard one. ¿Would I Lie to You¿, ¿Could it Be I¿m Falling in Love¿, and ¿Happy Together¿ have the soulful upbeat rhythms that make you dance around the room. Any one of these could be a top 40 hit. ¿I Can¿t Go for That¿, ¿Don¿t Dream It¿s Over¿ and ¿Don¿t Give Up on Us¿ make me forget the original songs with these new renditions. Donny¿s voice draws me into these songs that I never cared for before when the original artists did them. ¿After the Love is Gone¿, ¿All Out of Love¿, and ¿I¿m Not in Love¿ stay truer to the original songs, but Donny¿s voice is so strong and filled with emotion that it would hard not to fall for these great love songs. The original song ¿No One Has To Be Alone¿ from the upcoming "Land Before Time" movie soundtrack is a wonderful upbeat inspirational song with a fantastic message for young and old alike. The surprise song on the CD ¿Crazy Horses¿ is track 13. Just go straight to track 13 to listen to it and avoid the 2 minute delay after track 12. This song was originally done in 1972 by The Osmonds. Donny has treated us to a new updated version with his brothers. I think that most people who knew the original will find it similar, but at the same time quite different. If you¿ve never heard this song, you are in for a treat. This song was written by Alan, Wayne, and Merrill Osmond. Hearing this with those great Osmond voices is something very special. To Donny Osmond, thank you for sharing your angelic God-given voice with us for almost 40 years. Thanks for this album, we¿ve been wa

    This CD rules!!!

This is one outstanding CD! Donny's voice has never sounded better, and his approach to every song really makes you appreciate how good he really is. Listen to "Without You" or "Would I Lie To You" or "I Can't Go for That" if you want to know what I mean. Listen to the music!
