Overview

On March 17, 2009, while filming a documentary on the Chinese–North Korean border, Laura Ling and her colleague Euna Lee were violently apprehended by North Korean soldiers, charged with trespassing and "hostile acts," and imprisoned by Kim Jong Il's notoriously secretive Communist state. Kept totally apart, they endured months of interrogations and a trial before North Korea's highest court that led to a sentence of twelve years of hard labor in a North Korean prison camp.

When news of the arrest reached Laura's sister, journalist Lisa Ling, she immediately began a campaign to get Laura released. Her efforts led her from the State Department to the higher echelons of the media world and eventually to the White House. Lisa takes us deep into the drama between people in the highest levels of government, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Vice President Al Gore, and eventually former President Bill Clinton, who arrived in North Korea in mid-August for a suspenseful rescue.

Somewhere Inside is a timely, inspiring, and page-turning tale of survival set against the canvas of international politics. Writing with their strong, poignant voices, both sisters go beyond the headlines to reveal the unique bond that has sustained them throughout the most horrifying ordeal of their lives.

    Life-Changing!

This is one of those books that leaves a footprint on your heart. It is one of the most touching, if not, the most touching book I've ever read. Laura and Lisa have turned one of the most unimaginable situations into such an incredible read, that YOU WILL NOT be able to put down. This one is not to be missed!

    Great book...great people.

Chilling details of Laura Ling's time in North Korea. I enjoy reading and watching anything that gives me a look into this isolated world. Laura gets a chance, through telling her own story, gets a chance to shed light on the desperate situation people of North Korea. The intention of her trip to the China-North Korea border region was to give a face and voice to the people fleeing their home-land everyday, and the horrors they often face afterwards.

    Loved it

Somewhere Inside was amazing. I loved the parallel stories between Lisa and Laura Ling. Not only did they tell their story but you also saw what it was like for their capators and people helping to get both Laura and Euna back safely. I highly recommend this book.

Laura's scary ordeal shows the humanity of a very fearful, proud, and stereotyped people.

I loved this book, despite Laura's awful experience. She shows a very unique look into NK and perhaps an extremely valuable insight into their general mindset and the ways it manifests itself in individual people. No matter how deeply ingrained a philosophy or belief (all Americans are evil and want North Koreans to die and should be killed), spending time with people lets your own humanity seep through. She showed hers and slowly her captors did, too. We, as Americans, need to drastically and quickly reform our policies and treatment of NK, and perhaps take into account that they are human beings like us, despite the alarming extreme group mentality.

Great example of love, commitment and strength

The horror of the circumstances and imminent danger Laura and Euna were in was easier to read because of the incdedible love support and commitment, from everyone involved in their safe return.

Remarkable! If you followed this crusade from the outside looking in, then here is your chance to go inside. The Ling sisters share there most personal moments and hardest times with the world, I enjoyed this great read a must read for everyone...

Loved it! Wow, what a story...I have to say that I read this book in one sitting, granted I was on a plane for 10 hours, but I couldn't put it down. The Ling sisters are a force to be reckoned with. Laura's courage and zest for life permeate every inch of this book, forced to accept responsibility for her actions and dealing with the daily harshness of her captures she finds hope in God and just being able to get a glimpse of normalcy weather it be out a window or on her daily walks. I honestly felt inspired and in awe of her will to see another day...I have to say that I was getting an ulcer reading of her dilemma and trying to guess what was going to happen now. Loved every page and hated to see it end, but happy and grateful for the fabulous ending.

As for Lisa Ling...Love, Love, Love for her sister is impenetrable. She is a world wind force that spans 3 presidents, 1 vice president, Secretary of State, and countless other high ranking politicians, oh and let me not forget the richest woman in the world--Oprah. However, it wasn't just her stature/position, but her love for her sister that perhaps--no--did inspire and touch these people to move on her behalf. I loved reading the letters and when she got phone calls from Laura, my stomach turned in knots every time they communicated, the not knowing what was going to happen next made me stress (Lol). Your heart literally crys out for Lisa, her breaking moments come in waves and she shares every tense situation. When she cried, I cried...there are also cheerful moments and hopefully moments. Oh, and if your a Christian like me...you can appreciate the God-fearing grandma! Wow, this remarkable book has it all.

I loved this book! Pick it up...read it, you won't regret it!

    I Also Recommend:

    Unimaginable!

I could not begin to imagine trying to endure what this strong young lady had to deal with. Then, my heart goes out to her family. This is a powerful and moving story and is a must read because it's not being told by anybody but the person who lived it.

I also recommend "When God Stopped Keeping Score" that takes a revealing look at the power of forgiveness. If you have ever been bound by anger, guilt, hurt or pain, this book is for you.

    I Also Recommend:

    Dear Anonymous...

You wrote "DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME - She had no right being in a restricted area, she caused the U.S. government extreme embarassment (and heavens know what we had to give up in order to get her back to the USA) and ........now she's going to make $$$$$$ off of her stupidity. How typical of this generation, do something dumb, write a book and make money."

I take it that you yourself haven't read the book. I haven't (as yet) read the book, but your whole comment has zero value, except that I just might acquire a copy so I can judge for myself Laura Ling's alleged stupidity.

Some of the best lessons in life come from people who have done "stupid" things, and generally speaking reading about it in a book is a great way to learn about it, especially from people that have survived to write said book, such as my own as yet unpublished true-life story about water white rafting without a raft. The working title is "A Fool and His Duck Are Soon Parted". The subtitle is "Adrenalin and Underwater Rock Tumbling: The Amazing Instant Hangover Cure".
