Franz Werfel did the research for this book while hiding from the Nazis in a little town known as Lourdes, in the Pyranees foothills on the French side of the border with Spain.
Supporting evidence that this book is historically correct can be found in the Lourdes, and various French newspaper archives, in the year of 1858.
I wouldn't dream of spoiling this account for anyone. The movie came out just shortly after the book was first published in the USA. The movie is accurate to the book, and shuns any historical rewriting or bias. This true story has no need of exaggeration or embellishment.

It doesn't get much better than this book. It is truly a classic. The movie is great but the book is even better!
