From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Fans of Tamora Pierce's stellar saga about Alanna of Trebond can now get all four books one boxed set!

Packaged together for the first time, the Song of the Lioness quartet is the adventurous story of one girl's journey to overcome the obstacles facing her, become a valiant knight, and save Tortall from conquest. Alanna douses her female identity to begin her training in Alanna: The First Adventure, and when she gains squire status in In the Hand of the Goddess, her growing abilities make her a few friends -- and many enemies. Books 3 and 4 complete Alanna's adventure and secure her legend, with the new knight errant taking on desert tribesmen in The Woman Who Rides like a Man and seeking out the powerful Dominion Jewel in Lioness Rampant.

A must-read for Pierce's loyal followers and a perfect starting point for readers not yet familiar with her work, this boxed set is fantasy writing at its best. Pierce's gifted writing -- and her knack for creating heroines unafraid to challenge the status quo -- shines brightly in this Lioness set, taking it to the highest ranks, just like Alanna herself. FANTASTIC!

Tammy says that she would change a lot of things in this quartet, but I say she's crazy! These books are perfect and finally different from the usual male hero. Alanna (main character) shows that girls can do anything and everything that boys can do, and maybe even better! Great job and I'll be looking forward to reading more by Tamora Pierce!

    I Love the Adventure!!

Alanna is a heroine that other girls can look up to. She went in and became a knight desguised as a boy. So the series is awesome, once i read the first sentence i get hooked and keep reading.

OMG the best book like ever

I LOVE tamora pierce she is like the best author you can really get into her chararaters and understand them. she is a great author mainly because of the way she writes i love how it all just flow and your guessing what happens next to everyone you can really hate the bad guys and love the good ones. I own and have read all of her books at leats three times each. Tamora Pierces writing doesnt really compare to any other writter that i have read. She writes pre-harry potter fiction (not saying anything bad about hp) now there are all these people who are like look at all the money she made why don't i just go and write the first thing that pops into my head. Tamora pierce isn't like that her ideas are original and her own. Its starting to get hard to find a good fantasy story but I know i can always count on Tamora to have a great book!!

    A MUST Read

These books are amazing! They have to be my favorite out of all of the 5 box sets that Tamora has writen in Tortall. I have so many books, and most of the time I don't want to read half of them because I'm not in the mood or whatever. With any of the Tortall books, I'm in the mood. I have read all of the books a hundred times and still have not tired of them!

the best books of the world

i'l try to write something usefull instead of just praise about these great books. i just have to say this first:they are wonderfull, briliant, great, beautifull, gorgeous, funny, ingenous, original, unbelieveble, exciting, hilarious, spontanious and a few other things, but if i write them too you will think i'm crazy. well, maybe i am, but its just that these book are the best book i've ever read. they are so good, that at nights, after reading for hours in my bed, i have to force/convince myself that i have to sleep a few hours, and that the book is not going anywhere(not that this is easy). when i'm reading, my eyes get glued to the papers, its crazy, but thats how it is. sometimes i'm in the bus reading and suddenly i start laughing and everybody looks at me like i'm crazy or something. on one side, i want to read realy fast, because i want to know whats going to happen, and on the other side,i want to read really slow because i dont want to finish the book...its horrible. i now think i know how it feels like when you cant reject something. books can be an addiction too, in case you didnt know. i just think that tamora pierce is briliant. i cant believe that a common human being can spill al those beautifull words that make a book just right out of her pen..its marvellous. its her who they should give the nobel price, not that idiot einstein. he turns to dirt compared to tamora pierce, my hero, my idol, and everything anyone would want to be. i could write a whole book about this subject, but you might think i'm crazy, so i'l just stop. dont mind my awfull grammar, i'm dutch also. (in case you are wondering why all of the sudden al these dutch idiots start writing reviews on this site, i'l help you out:karishma and i both adore the tortall books, so when she wrote a review, it struck me as a good idea to let people know about these miracles that they call books.) if you agree with me...just send me an e-mail...i would love to have a penpall with the same interest

    I Love the Tortall series!

They are briliant! Every time I closed the book, I had such a heartache because I wanted soooo badly to be with Alanna... Every time I turned another page, I was feeling like shrieking or screaming because I was soooo exited (some times, I did scream :P )! I really could laugh or cry with these books... I've read the Song of the Lioness Quartet, the Immortals Quartet, and the Protector off the Small Quartet, but The Song of the Lioness was the best. Every girl would love to be Alanna, she's fantastic! P.S: Don't mind my grammar fault's, I'm not English. I'm Dutch, but in my desperate searching to everything that has something to do with Tortall, Alanna etc, everything is good! And I've a question, would someone who knows send me a e-mail: Wich ofthe series comes after the Protector of the Small series? That one about Aly (Alanna's daughter) Or the Circle of Magic or the Circle Opens? PLease tell me, because I really CAN'T wait to read more about Tortall...

    WOW!!!

This series is awesome! The way Pierce makes you want one thing to happen and she suprises you with something you weren't expecting. And I loved how the main character was a girl and how men didn't respect women then until her. I also liked how she fought for what she wanted and didn't let anything get in her way, human or god. At our school, we're only two books from the library, and I finished the first two in two days, one day each, and I think I actually didn't do my homework because they were so interesting. I can't wait to start the next quartet of the Tortall books.

    Somewhere I could never go

This book takes you on a Journey with a young girl concuring her enemies to get something she really believes in. This book was one of the best books I have ever read. It leads you through the life of a girl with real situations in the real world and becoming the hero no one thought she would become.

Do i even need to say it

All of Tamora Pierces are great.. it was the her circle of magic quartet that got me to start reading for fun in the first place. I found the first one when i was in 5th grade, till then, i couldn't read well. So i say, to all you parents, if i may say so, try to figure out what type of books your children like.. AND LET THEM READ THEM, cause thats the only way they will ever like reading.

    Amazing and Impressive work!

What luck that my daughter chose this series to read! I often read the books she chooses before she does so that we can share in the joys of discussing them, with this being no exception. With this quartet she stumbled upon a wonderful, rich and majestic treasure!

I could scarcely put the four books of this series down long enough to sleep... I devoured them all within two days time! Pierce's writing is so detailed, and the characters so true and fulfillling that I couldn't have envisioned the story more clearly had I watched a movie saga about Alanna and her experiences!

With each book I became even more deeply engrossed in Alanna's journey. The fourth book [Lioness Rampant] is the most enjoyable of all; I caught myself literally cheering and whooping while reading it. (Okay, now I'm blushing *laugh* 'This isn't how an adult is supposed to react to a teen-ish book...right?')

Alanna's fierce drive, pride and honor serve as a model for any young woman (or young man, I suppose.) As both a parent and an educator, I can't recommend this series highly enough to anyone age 10 or 11 up!

Note, however, that Alanna's journey is not a pristine one, and covers all (and I do mean ALL) aspects and challenges of being a teenager, including love, puberty and sex, life and death. I appreciate how Pierce has chosen to deal with these issues, without being wordy or graphic. What a pleasure to read!

I cannot wait to purchase the Protector of the Small quartet to see what lies ahead for the future of Tortall and it's female Knights! :)
