All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
Other than among her peers, singer and songwriter Anita Carter -- daughter of Mother Maybelle, sister of June and Helen -- may not have gotten her proper due (though she was easily considered to be the best singer of them all), but this single-disc collection on Omni goes a long way toward making that happen, at least for country music fans. While her appearances with the Carters appear as early as 1952, and she cut singles for a host of labels in the middle of the decade, this collection concentrates on the early '60s through 1972, when she recorded for RCA and later Columbia.
The 28-track set kicks off with the mysterious "2001 (Ballad to the Future)," written by the equally apocryphal K. Jones, which was recorded with Maybelle and her sisters in 1972 on the Columbia album Travelin' Minstrel Band. Given what happened on September 11, this was an eerily prophetic tune, but Anita's lead vocal on the track makes it downright chilling. There are numerous other cuts with the Carters -- seven are taken from this album alone. But there are some beautiful solo works, including her singles such as the defiant "It's My Life (And I'll Live It)" from 1966, and "I've Heard the Wind Blow Before" from 1967. There are some tremendous duet appearances here that were issued as singles for RCA, including "Rings of Gold" with Waylon Jennings as a sneak-peek single for his LP Just to Satisfy You; the 45-only "No One's Gonna Miss Me"; and "All of You Belongs to Me" from the Waylon album. There is a great reprise of her '50s duets with Hank Snow on "Promise to John," and even "A Song to Mama" that featured the Carters paired with Johnny Cash. But the real wealth of material here is scattered through the five previously unreleased cuts, beginning with the Lee Hazlewood-esque "I Won't Change for You." These tracks and the track from Three Generations (a Carter Sisters sampler) that closes this disc -- a deeply moving reading of Mickey Newbury's "Sweet Memories" -- best define Anita Carter and demand attention. This sampler is a solid single-disc collection, and while it may not have all the very best stuff on it, it is still all killer, no filler, and the only real comp listeners have in the United States.
