Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-This collection, arranged chronologically, presents a humanized view of the battles and personalities of the American Revolution. Through a serious study of 10 popular as well as lesser-known songs, details and background are discussed. Among the selections are ``Yankee Doodle,'' ``The Sergeant,'' ``The Battle of Saratoga,'' ``The Swamp Fox,'' and ``The Surrender of Cornwallis.'' All the verses are included. Unusual terms are defined, and slang and obscure references are explained. Black-and-white and full-color reproductions of period woodcuts, oil paintings, and prints appear throughout. Occasionally the artist's work is attributed. The musical score for voice and keyboard is not difficult to follow. Amy Cohn's From Sea to Shining Sea (Scholastic, 1993) contains only a few of the same songs and is a more general collection. This is a solid offering for older history and music students.-Beth Tegart, Oneida City Schools, NY
Carolyn Phelan
A musical introduction to the American Revolution, this book presents 10 broadside ballads of the 1770s and 1780s, with piano and chord notations and the story behind each song. Besides giving the background of the songs, Silverman explains period words, phrases, and references that might be obscure or confusing today. "Yankee Doodle" is the only familiar song. Others include "The Riflemen of Bennington," "The Swamp Fox," and "In the Days of Seventy-Six." Two or three reproductions of period paintings and engravings, some in color, illustrate each selection. An interesting combination of music and history, primarily for large collections.
