Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
Secret Garden -- Norwegian composer/keyboardist Rolf Lovland and Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry -- enchanted the world with this debut album of impressionistic works for Celtic and Norwegian instruments, orchestra, voices, and piano. With the exception of "The Rap," a buoyant folk tune that practically dances from the speakers, this gentle album mines the deep riches of the spirit. A nocturne, a pastorale, a serenade, an Italian cantoluna, an adagio based on a theme by Bach, and a peaceful piece for boy soprano and choir -- these are the songs that form the tapestry of this lush album. Key soloists include Davy Spillane on low whistles and Uilleann pipe, David Agne on...

This musical garden is a ravishing beauty.
All Music Guide - Carol Wright
Secret Garden is Norwegian composer Rolf Loveland piano, keyboards and Irish violinist Fionnula Sherry. The album, however, offers much more than this duo; it is awash in orchestral strings real ones, a choir real one, and as many percussionists, harps, fiddles, keyboards, and whistles as are needed. Songs from a Secret Garden, a chart-topper in Europe, is unabashedly romantic, absolutely gorgeous. "Sigma," featuring boy soprano Rhonan Sugrue and the Irish National Choir, is very pensive, like dried flowers left, an expected return disappointed. The lyrics begin, "I search for the sign that will set my soul free." Although Celtic music fans will find many moments of bittersweet nostalgia between the violin, pipes, and pennywhistles, the album's closest musical relation might just be the intimate works of Maurice Ravel, particularly his "Pavanne for a Dead Princess." Romantic themes of true depth, played full out. Secret Garden is not afraid of tenderness nor beauty.

    PERFECT

I discovered this CD when enjoying tea at a local tea shoppe and bakery. It truly takes me to "the landscape of my soul" as the composer intended.

    more from this reviewer

    Interesting arrangements

Wonderful keyboard and violin artists with interesting background instruments makes for relaxing listening on a cold, stormy night under a blanket by the fire with a good book. Enough said.

    Thanks for Introducing Mehdi

I've always enjoyed Secret Garden and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered an artist by the name of Mehdi (pronounced meddie). After some investigation I found his site (SoothingMusic.Com) and listened to the samples... I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to his CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Secret Garden fan, I find Mehdi to be a tad more interesting. I have them both in my multi-disc CD player and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.

    EROTIC & SENSUAL & PASSIONATE

One of the most moving, passionate CD's ever made. People stop me in my car daily to ask me what the music is because it's compelling and makes people "FEEL". They should write a movie to accompany this music.

    A beginning of the "best!"

A Secret Garden-A lush, beautiful, breath-taking discovery; of monumental and majestic proportions. Sounds of a pure, clean, clear summer breeze; waiting to be discovered. I believe this is one of the few sources of undefiled expressions of God-given talent; in a world full of darkness, destruction, and pain. Secret Garden is the perfect vehicle for enabling us, who appreciate this music; to soar above the clouds like the majestic sea eagle! If anybody out there claims a discriminating taste for the good things in life, let he or she taste of this cup. Songs from a Secret Garden is only the Genesis of this collaboration. There are many more treasures from where this came. Do yourself a favor and follow your own special path to this Secret Garden. Sincerely, Steven from Ohio a.k.a./modzrt@ameritech.net

    Secret Garden

Nocturne was the first song I ever listened to from Secret Garden and as a Norwegian eurovision song contest entry it gave me images of Norway before I went there. Every time i listen to it, it brings me memories from the past, of the beautiful people I met in the land of Norway. When you close your eyes, this music paints the fjords and the mist...

    Glorious relaxation

I fell in love with this music some time ago. We played ''Songs from a Secret Garden'' as guests arrived for my daughter's wedding. A number of people commented on the wonderful prelude music.

    Mesmerized!

Songs From A Secret Garden has some of the most beautiful music that I have ever heard. The very first time I listened to Nocturne it gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes. It still does. Bravo to all of the talented artists who put this exceptional album together!

    My favorite

This is one of my favorite albums. Especially ''song from a secret garden'', it's so dreamy that I am often drifted away while listening to it =) I like this album because there isn't artificial sounds of the rain, water flow, bird chirps, etc. It is simply beautiful, and romantic...
