Barnes & Noble - David McGee
With Doug Phelps's bluesy, gritty vocals evoking the rebel spirit of Ronnie Van Zant, and his band working tight and hot behind him, the Kentucky Headhunters' Songs from the Grass String Ranch offers a persuasive portrait of a band that has found itself again. The tempo is set from the git-go by the churning, southern-fried blues-rock of "Grass String Ranch," with Phelps belting out an ode to a lively rural utopia as lead guitarist Greg Martin offers his own scathing commentary via terse, wailing lines weaving their way through the narrative. "Louisiana Coco," "Country Life," and "Dry-Land Fish" are in-the-pocket up-tempo workouts celebrating the land, the life, and the ...

"Louisiana Coco," "Country Life," and "Dry-Land Fish" are in-the-pocket up-tempo workouts celebrating the land, the life, and the down-home women the Headhunters love to love. But there are more than boogie and blues-rock burners to recommend this album. Check out "Back to the Sun," an old-west saga of a father's murder and his son's vow of revenge. The band's finest moment arrives with "Too Much to Lose," a beautiful, bluesy ballad with Phelps delivering a heartfelt plea for his woman to come back home to her changed, chastened man. This one simmers at low heat in prototypical urban blues style as guitarist Martin underscores the song's tormented lyrics. In other words, Songs from the Grass String Ranch is a hands-down winner, making it clear that the Kentucky Headhunters are back and fiercer than ever. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving bunch of guys.

All Music Guide - Campbell
Songs From the Grass String Ranch is the fifth release by the Kentucky Headhunters, and while it is enjoyable, there's nothing out of the ordinary here. The band continues to play their crowd-pleasing mixture of southern country rock & roll blues boogie, which you either love them for or don't. In this case it would be unfortunate to miss out on the fun

    Hard to find CD!

My husband used to have this CD and it was lost. I searched for another one to give him for Christmas as he absolutely loves this. If you are a Kentucky Headhunters fan this CD is not to be missed. "Louisiana Coco" is especially catchy and entertaining. A great southern rock/country CD.
