Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street? This essential three-CD box set paves the way, celebrating 35 years of sunny days with 63 songs, 25 of which are previously unreleased. The Street's diverse neighborhood is reflected in the collection's fabulous celebrity contributors, from B. B. King and Johnny Cash to Celine Dion and Destiny's Child. Disc 1 opens with the irrepressible Sesame Street theme song and then gives way to a veritable who's who of the music world. Piano Man Billy Joel serenades Oscar the Grouch with "Just the Way You Are," about the importance of being true to yourself -- even if you're grouchy -- while Aaron Neville's supple, sugar-sweet voice complements Ernie's on the poignant "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon." But it's not all teary ballads -- Sesame Street can rock out, too! Melissa Etheridge's raspy voice works magic on her acoustic performance of "Like the Way I Do (Like the Way U Does)," a playful homage to the letter U. Elmo learns the importance of holding hands while crossing the street from Hootie and the Blowfish on a rousing rendition of "Hold My Hand." And R.E.M. shine in "Shiny Happy People (Furry Happy Monsters)," thanks to Michael Stipe and the boys teaching the Muppet crew about feelings, as "furry happy monsters feeling glad" turn to "furry sobbing monsters feeling sad" and back again. The Muppets get their time in the sun, too, with unforgettable Sesame favorites such as the deceptively simple and infectious "Sing," which winds up being a lesson on how to live a life with passion and even gives the Carpenters' version of this classic a run for the money. Bert and Ernie's "But I Like You" confirms that friends can like different things and still be pals, and the wild and crazy Cookie Monster sings "C Is for Cookie" and "that's good enough for me." Diehard fans will appreciate the 68-page booklet, which includes lyrics, rare photos, and liner notes by award-winning Sesame Street composer and producer Christopher Cerf. But the irresistibly diverse and daring Sesame Street is an essential stop on the pop culture map for everyone now; and this is the quintessential gift for children and adults who understand the timeless importance of rubber duckies and "Bein' Green."
All Music Guide - Rob Theakston
For those who grew up on the magic of PBS and Sesame Street, there are countless musical moments permanently imprinted in the back of our minds, as well as in popular culture's. That said, there are 63 moments spanning three-and-a-half decades that children and adults of all ages will recall and sing along to with great fondness. An armada of Sesame Street's guest appearances are included here : Cab Calloway, Lena Horne, R.E.M., the Fugees, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Tony Bennett and Johnny Cash are just but a few. However, it's the interludes from the show's original material featuring cast members, muppets and educational songs that are inarguably the true stars here. From the opening bells and guitar of Sesame Street's instantly identifiable theme song, to the charming, simple anthems courtesy of genius Joe Raposo, to such classics as "C Is for Cookie," "Rubber Duckie," "Doin' the Pigeon" and "Mah Na Mah Na," to the contemplative, potent "Bein' Green" from Kermit the Frog -- it's all here. While some collectors may scoff at the availability of most of this material on other CDs and truth be told, a follow-up collection focusing entirely on the earliest years would be superb, fans who grew up on the show and children alike will find having them all on one disc, complete with superb liner notes, lyrics and pictures, an essential piece in their children's record collection. This is the definitive resource, bar none. Simply outstanding.

    I Also Recommend:

I would recommend this especially for 2 to 5 year olds.

As a grandmother of a two year old, I enjoy listening to these songs with her because they bring back the time when my children loved them.

    always in our car

I came across this set by chance while searching for the tv version of REM's "Furry Happy Monsters", which our kids love to dance to(ok, me too), and it is jammed with wonderful tunes and artists. Now 7, 7 and 4, they still delight in these selections, especially the patter, and it's only out of the car when on loan or being played at home! Essential.

AWESOME for children and FUN for adults

I have given this CD to 3 others in addition to buying it for my daughter... Everyone has LOVED it!!! It is a lot of fun and teaches many great concepts such as colors, counting, numbers, and spatial relationships. My daughter, husband, and I LOVE to dance and sing with the Sesame Street gang!

    Great songs.... new and old!!

All the songs included are real classics. My children and I have enjoyed them for 13 years. I only wish they had included Ernie's song 'Imagine That...' . It's my favorite song on Sesame Street! All in all... its fun-listening!

I watched Sesame Street when the show first aired. This collection is a wonderful way to remember flashes of my past and my child's past. I look forward to sharing this collection with my grandchildren.

Anyone who grew up with Sesame Street will LOVE this!

As a Mom of 3 boys ages 13 yrs, 9 yrs. and 21 months, I have loved Sesame Street and the whole gang for years! I especially love seeing and hearing famous artists perform with the Gang at Sesame Street. This CD Set brings back all the wonderful memories of past songs and singers who have graced the three block street on PBS. I was surprised to hear lots of artists I had missed on the show like Aerosmith, Johnny Cash and Melissa Ethridge. My two younger sons love to listen to this set in the car. It completely calms the toddler, which is no small feat. Even if you don't have kids but grew up yourself with SS, you should buy this set. Just don't tell your racquet ball buddies.
