Songs from the Street: 35 Years of Music

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Amy Barkat
Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street? This essential three-CD box set paves the way, celebrating 35 years of sunny days with 63 songs, 25 of which are previously unreleased. The Street's diverse neighborhood is reflected in the collection's fabulous celebrity contributors, from B. B. King and Johnny Cash to Celine Dion and Destiny's Child. Disc 1 opens with the irrepressible Sesame Street theme song and then gives way to a veritable who's who of the music world. Piano Man Billy Joel serenades Oscar the Grouch with "Just the Way You Are," about the importance of being true to yourself -- even if you're grouchy -- while Aaron Neville's supple, sugar-sweet voice ...

Piano Man Billy Joel serenades Oscar the Grouch with "Just the Way You Are," about the importance of being true to yourself -- even if you're grouchy -- while Aaron Neville's supple, sugar-sweet voice complements Ernie's on the poignant "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon." But it's not all teary ballads -- Sesame Street can rock out, too! Melissa Etheridge's raspy voice works magic on her acoustic performance of "Like the Way I Do (Like the Way U Does)," a playful homage to the letter U. Elmo learns the importance of holding hands while crossing the street from Hootie and the Blowfish on a rousing rendition of "Hold My Hand." And R.E.M. shine in "Shiny Happy People (Furry Happy Monsters)," thanks to Michael Stipe and the boys teaching the Muppet crew about feelings, as "furry happy monsters feeling glad" turn to "furry sobbing monsters feeling sad" and back again. The Muppets get their time in the sun, too, with unforgettable Sesame favorites such as the deceptively simple and infectious "Sing," which winds up being a lesson on how to live a life with passion and even gives the Carpenters' version of this classic a run for the money. Bert and Ernie's "But I Like You" confirms that friends can like different things and still be pals, and the wild and crazy Cookie Monster sings "C Is for Cookie" and "that's good enough for me." Diehard fans will appreciate the 68-page booklet, which includes lyrics, rare photos, and liner notes by award-winning Sesame Street composer and producer Christopher Cerf. But the irresistibly diverse and daring Sesame Street is an essential stop on the pop culture map for everyone now; and this is the quintessential gift for children and adults who understand the timeless importance of rubber duckies and "Bein' Green."
