While teen pop divas Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera continue to pursue their belly-baring blonde ambitions, R&B ingénue Alicia Keys allows her music to speak for her. On her impressive debut, Songs in A Minor, the 20-year-old, classically trained pianist delivers a haunting, sophisticated mix of blues, soul, gospel, and jazz, all sung -- as the title suggests -- in the key of A minor. The New York-born phenom wrote, arranged, and produced the bulk of the disc's 16 tracks, which, despite her youth, resonate with the depth and maturity of a more seasoned artist. Several songs explore affairs of the heart, including the lead single, "Fallin'," a bluesy ode to the heartbreaking reality of unrequited love; "Girlfriend," which chugs along to a hip-hop break beat, and the piano-driven jaunts "Goodbye" and "How Come You Don't Call Me," a soulful Prince cover. In addition to her ruminations on love, Keys, like Destiny's Child did on "Survivor," pays homage to strong-willed sisterhood on the mid-tempo, moody soul of "A Woman's Worth." With lyrics such as "I know why the caged bird sings/Only joy comes from song," "Caged Bird" is perhaps the disc's most personal and revealing track. And with music as her muse, this lovely songbird has a harmonious future in song.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Alicia Keys' debut album, Songs in A Minor, made a significant impact upon its release in the summer of 2001, catapulting the young singer/songwriter to the front of the neo-soul pack. Critics and audiences were captivated by a 19-year-old singer whose taste and influences ran back further than her years, encompassing everything from Prince to smooth '70s soul, even a little Billie Holiday. In retrospect, it was the idea of Alicia Keys that was as attractive as the record, since soul fans were hungering for a singer/songwriter who seemed part of the tradition without being as spacy as Macy Gray or as hippie mystic as Erykah Badu while being more reliable than Lauryn Hill. Keys was all that, and she had style to spare -- elegant, sexy style accentuated by how she never oversang, giving the music a richer feel. It was rich enough to compensate for some thinness in the writing -- though it was a big hit, "Fallin'" doesn't have much body to it -- which is a testament to Keys' skills as a musician. And, the fact is, even though there are some slips in the writing, there aren't many, and the whole thing remains a startling assured, successful debut that deserved its immediate acclaim and is already aging nicely.

Alicia Keys is one of my favorite artists because she's individual and writes her own music. She sings what she feels, like in the song "Lovin' U" she tells how she feels about someone she loves, or in the song "Troubles" when she tells of how people, including herself, are so troubled by what happens in the real world. My favorite song on her album is "Butterflyz" where she tells that her lover gives her "Butterflies/got me flyin' so high in the sky/I can't control the butterflies". Just get the album if you like slow grooves, happenin' beats, and awesome piano playing.

Awesome cd. I'm a stay at home mom who hasn't bought a cd since quitting my job 3 years ago. I couldn't resist buying this one after seeing the MTV awards. LOVE IT.

I give it 2 stars for some lyrical content. Just another sample ridden cd with a mediocre singer. This one just can play keyboards. A big disappoinment. She did do a good job with How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore (written and originally recorded by Prince).

I love this cd!!! Is in one of the best out there right now. Alicia Keys is a very talented artist that you could probably expect much more from in the future. And the fact that she wrote all the songs expect the ''Prince'' remake makes it even better. The cd is on a personal note and I can relate to it sooooo much!

Alicia Keys is by far the best R&B artist out there, with her debut album ''Songs in A Minor.'' In my opinion, the Fallin remix is better then the first one, and it really sucks that it isnt on the cd, but that's okay, cause its still a great song. A Womans Worth is really good to, and the intro. There really isn't a bad song on there, they're all worth listening to.

I think she is pure talent and will go far in her career. I think her music touches all age groups. I love her song ''FALLIN''.

Alicia is DA BOMB. The songs are very smooth and soulful and very well written. It's very refreshing to hear such quality music in an industry full of over-saturated bubble gum.

I went to an Alicia Keys concert in the summer of 2001. Alicia Keys is truly the definitive artist, the queen of magnificent rhythm and beat in the key of life, and truly, the unique and original artists that has her own stage to soar and fly in the music industry. Unlike the over annoying and desperate-attention-booty swinging-whiney spitting blondes like Britney Spears, who whiplashes beauty but no talent or rhythm in her music, and Christina, who is quite a singer but too provacative and over driven in trying to get attention as a rebel, this songbird has more than beauty, but she has a mind, a gift that rarely comes in the face of the music industry. Her lyrics lets the piano in her voice and at her fingertips speak places of life, broken love, the affairs of a heart made of glass, powerful soul, and magnificent power and hip hop beats in the key of harmony. This woman is a preacher, a songstress that chants in her own key, following no other attention getting artists that works more for the media than for the music and the fans. She's just Ms. Alicia Keys, on her way to do great things for the people by the light of her love.

I like her. She is just one great artist that will not fade away quickly. Her voice, her hair, her face and the style she has is just great! I like her music and I think that it will make a big difference of some sort in the near future.

I'm a die hard fanatic of the soft-jazzy, bluesy music genre. For the longest time, Sade has quenched my thirst, but never my thirst for something totally new until her new album. Alicia Keys is drowning me right now in that goodness with her own release ''Songs in A Minor''. She'll go very far indeed (see Sade). Thank heaven.

Alecia Keys is just what the music world needed now.Her soulful music brings something fresh to our sometimes monotonous world. Alecia's songs definately come from the depths of her soul and I can certainly relate to her lyrics. What I admire most about Alecia is her uniqueness, she is not afraid to be herself and do what she loves. Alecia is definately a positive role model for young women today and she deserves all the rewards she is receiving now and even more.

This CD was great and I enjoyed it. You can feel what she felt when she wrote it. She is a talented person and she will go nowhere but up. I loved the CD and her personality and her style. She teaches a lot of lessons through her music. You can tell that her music is her way of releasing her stress. She probably feels more comfortable with herself singing. Her CD has all kinds of different types of music. I personally like all of the songs because they all resemble different parts of me.

Alicia Keys is a young artist on the verge of breaking through the charts. She uses her soulful voice and artistry with the piano to express feelings of love, hurt, and joy throughout her c.d. ''Songs in A Minor'' is a c.d. that does not succumb to the standards of today's genre of music, instead she uses her own style of music from the heart and life experiences to make a compelling c.d. with wonderful music. Her music does not compare to the artists of today; even though she is so young, her music screams maturity and experience. ''Songs In A Minor'' is a c.d. that can be listened to by a multitude of people. Almost anyone who has been heartbroken or in love can relate to the words from her debut single ''Fallin'.''

Where did Alecia keys come from? This is what we have been needed for the music entertainment in years she will definately make me want to go out and buy her album. She has fenominal vocal capabilities, sounding almost angelical, and not to mention those enticing eyes along with her stunning visage. She is unquestionably an individual to watch out for.

In this debut album, Alicia Keys shines her vocal and instrumental talents. As a 20 yr. old, she is definitely off to a good start. Every song on this cd is full of jazz and R&B...she sings with so much feeling. I definitely recommend buying this cd.
