Overview

Tom Lehrer recorded rather sporadically starting in the 1950s then abruptly retired in the mid-'60s from his unique solo musical comedy act. He's a competent pianist with a voice that is perfect for his original material. This compilation combines both of his records that were originally pressed and sold privately on the Lehrer label, which he later re-recorded with improved sound for Reprise as Songs by Tom Lehrer and the live concert An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer. While the differences between this CD and the Reprise versions are minimal, other than a little more muffled piano sound on these earlier recordings, it's fun to hear hilarious works like "The Irish Ballad," the creative "Oedipus Rex," and his satire of military life in "It Makes a Fellow Proud to Be a Soldier." Several favorites, including "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" and "The Masochism Tango" are heard in orchestrated versions as well as by Lehrer alone. And Lehrer finally got around to recording "I Got It from Agnes," which implies how venereal disease is spread (in an amusing fashion, if that's possible) without ever coming out and saying it directly. This CD is a must for Lehrer fanatics.

Nothing of this ilk has been funnier since Lehrer created these songs. I recommend "The Elements" and "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" especially.

I enjoy all the songs on this collection, but I did not realize when I purchased it that these were all done in a studio. Tom Lehrer is best listened to when accompanied by a live audience. The laughter of the audience really does enhance the performance. Especially given the space in time, audience reaction gauges just how funny his material was at the time. Even today you could imagine how controversial some of this songs may have sounded, like the "Old Dope Peddler" and "Be Prepared." It was still enjoyable and the advantage of this CD is that it includes songs from both Revisited and An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer. If you can, I would recommend buying each separately. In that way you can get a sense of being in the audience when he performed. Still very enjoyable.

Tom Lehrer's 'Songs and More Songs' album is by far one of the greatest comedy albums of all time. In today's society, it would be considered Lehrer's Greatest Hits album...and it definitely is that! This album contains some of his funniest pieces. Lehrer was a Harvard-professor-gone-nutty back in the 50s and 60s, so some of the humor in the songs may seem a bit outdated. However, it's still funny--even after 50 years. I recommend it to just about anyone!
